Edith and Frankie - Tony Peyton
Fences are Funny
One day Edith’s friend Winnie came over to play with them all. Edith knew what to expect because they had been on many an adventure together but she thought she should let Frankie know what she was in for,
Well, Winnie is active.
she said, hesitating a bit when she said ‘active’.
And when she thought about it, ‘active’ didn’t seem like the right word.
"Winnie is very active." Edith said, really emphasizing ‘very’ when she said it. But it still wasn’t the right word to describe her friend Winnie. Ahhh, Winnie is a tornado!
she finally said, And she is a good friend and so brave.
Brave is good.
responded Frankie, not really knowing what brave was. She was very young and had never had a need to be brave yet.
Edith couldn’t wait to tell Winnie about the confrontation she had just had with a huge Cat in Frankie’s front yard. Truth is Edith actually shouldn’t have been out there but the gate was left open and it seemed like that was permission to go through it.
Winnie, you should have seen the size of this beast. He was huge.
Edith barked loudly to make sure Winnie understood just how big the cat was. Didn’t he run when you showed up? That’s what those horrible creatures usually do.
Winnie lived with two Cats, Taz and Bubba and had many a story to tell, none of them very complimentary.
No. Can you believe it! In fact, he not only didn’t leave he made himself all big and everything and started to stalk me like I was some sort of Squirrel he wanted for dinner. Imagine that, hunting me in my own backyard. And that’s not all Winnie, he leapt at me and tried to claw me with his arms. I have to say it was only my incredible athleticism and lightning reflexes that saved me! He was a mean one.
What happened to him?
Winnie asked.
My human is so good. I hear her friends call her Mac. She came running out, spreading her arms like some giant Eagle and making squawky sounds just like a Heron. That Cat took one look at her and took off. It was funny.
Cats are the worst
Winnie piped up, They don’t bark, they don’t even thank you for anything. Not ever. They just walk around the place like they own it. And you won’t believe what I came home to the other day?
Edith always enjoyed Winnie’s Cat stories and she knew that Frankie had never ever even seen a Cat.
So my human owners, Sophie and Jon are really nice and they built a doorway into the house for Taz and Bubba. They wanted them to be able to get back into the house during the day when they were off at work. So what do you suppose those Cats did with that?! Without even a ‘thank you’ they invited the neighbourhood Cat into my house! A huge Siamese Cat, all attitude and preening, taking up my owners king size bed for himself.
Oh man, some nerve. What happened when your owners came home.
asked Frankie, all of a sudden thinking that these Cat things must be weird or something.
Winnie said,Well nothing very much. My owners threw him out but I know he comes back all the time. I’ll never understand why humans keep Cats. All they care about is regular meals and a comfortable place when the weather turns nasty. And what is it with Cats?! When my owner orders me to do something, I do it. He says,
Sit Winnie, I sit. He says,
No bark Winnie! I stop barking. So what do Cats do when human shouts at them?
I don’t know, what do they do?
Frankie thought it was a good question.
Nothing Frankie. They take a message!
, answered Edith and she gave Winnie a knowing glance.
Yeh
added Edith, "and they act like they’re so tough. Ha! Like fun they are. If they’re so tough where’d ‘you’re a scaredy Cat’ come from. No one ever says, ‘you’re a scaredy Dog, right!’"
And she stopped talking as though she had made a good point which confused Frankie because she for sure knew she herself been a ‘scaredy Dog’ a few times already in her life. Anyway, they all agreed that Dogs were the best and Frankie had never ever met a Cat so he really didn’t have much more to
