    Chapter 1

    Nicolo

Andrea Ferretti looked up at me with wide eyes. He was afraid. I knew that he was about to piss his pants. Tony stood behind him, one hand on the fat man's shoulder. He had a mean smile on his face. Tony was a sadist. He was so much worse than I could ever be, and I was a cruel bastard myself. But if I needed to make someone talk or intimidate him – Tony was my man. In my circles they called him the surgeon. Tony actually had medical training, so he knew exactly where he had to cut and how deep to achieve maximum pain, while keeping the 'patient' alive for as long as possible.

Well, Andrea. I ask you again. When. Do. I. Get. My. Money?

    I ... I got ... got a deal... coming, Ni-nicolo. If ... if I have it, then you'll get two installments at o-once.

I took a chair and pushed it close to Andrea Ferretti with the backrest facing him, and straddled it, crossing my arms on the back. I looked at Ferretti, who hastily averted his gaze and stared at his lap, where a wet spot began to spread.

I knew the fat cunt would piss himself, I thought in disgust.

I ignored the biting urine smell. I had smelled worse in my life than piss. You couldn’t be squeamish in my line of business.

    Look! At! Me! I demanded.

    Ferretti whimpered, but obeyed.

When does this deal take place?

    Sat-saturday.

And how do I know you're not trying to fuck with me again?

    I swear, I – I – don't – don't – fu-fuck – with you.

Tell me, Andrea, am I known for being patient and understanding? Huh?

Ferretti's eyes widened with fear. He shook his head.

I can’t give you a reprieve if I have no assurance that you will keep your word. You understand that, don’t you?

Ferretti paled and nodded. Tears leaked from his eyes as he looked at me imploringly. I sighed. Seriously. Why did people always think a pleading look could have any effect on me? As if I would suddenly go all soft on them.

Please. I swear on my daughter's life, I'll pay.

A big smile crossed my face. I had just come up with a perfect idea, how I could assure that Ferretti paid as agreed.

Your daughter. – You love your daughter, right?

Terror showed on Ferretti's face as he realized what I was getting at.

Please. Don’t hurt my daughter. She has nothing to do with it.

I sighed again. He should know that the Mafia didn’t give a shit if family members were innocent. If we need to encourage someone to not fuck with us, then we had no problem hurting innocent people. Personally I didn’t like hurting women, but Ferretti didn’t need to know that. And when push came to shove I would hurt his daughter. – Well, Tony would.

When will your daughter come home?

Ferretti shook his head violently. He obviously didn’t want to tell me. I looked at Tony and nodded. Tony grabbed Ferretti under the chin and jerked his head back. Ferretti screamed.

Which ear do you want to keep, Andrea? I asked conversationally, as if I just asked him if he preferred wine or beer.

Ferretti tried to shake his head, but Tony's grip didn’t allow it. The fat cunt sobbed like a girl, but he just didn’t want to give in. So I nodded to Tony again. He gripped Ferretti's left ear with one hand and cut it off with the blade he held in his other hand. Ferretti's roar echoed through the room. Blood ran out of the ear stump and soaked the man's expensive tailored suit.

Now, I ask you. One. Last time. When is your daughter coming home?

Pleeease! I’ll pay. I ... I promise. Let ... leave Bi-bianca alone ... please. I’m begging you! Have mercy! Pleeeeaaase!

The man was sobbing helplessly now. He wasn’t a hero, but it was obvious that he would do much more to protect his daughter. I had no interest in pushing this torture too far. After all, he still had to be able to raise my money, because I wasn’t willing to write it off just yet. No, I had to do something different. I got up from the chair and strolled into the kitchen. There I soaked a kitchen towel with lukewarm water and returned to the living room. Again sitting astride the chair, I pressed the wet cloth against the bleeding wound.

    Untie him!

Tony looked at me questioningly. Obviously he had expected to keep the game going a bit further. I gave him a warning look, and he hurried to sever the zip ties with which he had tied Ferretti's hands.

Here, press this on the wound, I said, leading Ferretti's clammy hand to the cloth.

While he pressed the cloth to his head, he looked at me suspiciously. My humanitarian act wasn’t what he had expected from Il Diabolo. I smiled indulgently. It was a bit like the old good cop – bad cop game.

Look, I started calmly, as if I were talking to a child. I don’t want to hurt you. I don’t want to hurt Bianca either. As long as you stick to the agreement, nothing will happen to her. So tell me what time she gets home.

Please do not hurt my baby.

You have my word on it, Andrea. As long as you pay your monthly installments on time, nothing will happen to her. I may be a monster, but I am a man of my word.

Ferretti nodded and took a deep breath.

    She comes home around six.

I glanced at the clock over the fireplace. It was just after half past five. Well. We wouldn’t have to wait too long. I took a box of Camel out of my jacket and took out a cigarette. Tony pulled out his lighter and lit my cigarette. I took a deep draft and blew smoke into Ferretti's face.

We are waiting for your daughter here. And you will not do anything stupid if you want her safe and unharmed. Tony here would love to hurt her. He's has a mean streak, you know? A word from me, and he'll make Bianca wish she was never born. Do you understand that?

    Ye-yes, whined Ferretti. I ... I do everything ... whatever you want. J-just do-don’t hurt her.

Goood. Then we’ll get along nicely. No reason for unnecessary violence, right? I have to admit, I don’t enjoy seeing a woman being tortured, but that doesn’t mean I have any scruples to make good of my threat if you give me a reason.

Punctually at six o'clock a car drove into the driveway. A little later, the front door opened.

I'm home, daddy! Are you in the living room? Came a female voice.

Ferretti looked at me helplessly. I nodded to him.

Yes, I'm here, he shouted, throwing me
