INTRODUCTION

Welcome to Flashes of Virtue and Honor, Book 1 of The Saga of Sir Bryan!

With my flash fiction, my goal is always to entertain, to tell fun, exciting, or thought-provoking stories in exactly five hundred words.

As of this writing, my son Julian has just turned one month old, and the experience of being a new father has managed to creep into my writing. Daily, I find myself reflecting on my own life with great scrutiny, as I’m sure many new fathers do.

What can I teach my son? How can I give him the best upbringing? What can I do to equip him with the skills and tools that he’ll need to thrive in this world full of wolves and fools?

Sir Bryan has naturally emerged to help me put my thoughts, hopes and fears into a solid form. He is the embodiment of the knightly virtues, which coincidentally, have many parallels to the virtues I hope to teach my son. Grace and compassion for those less fortunate, courage and bravery in the face of injustice and great adversity, and the relentless determination to be a person of honor, to always be true to your word and to never take the low road to get what you want.

Virtues that I hope to impart to my son, that I, myself, struggle with every day.

So, through his adventures, through the saga of his journey with its successes and misfortunes, I wrote Sir Bryan in part to be an example to myself: to remind me that no one is perfect, but everyone can try to be better than they were yesterday.
