    Chapter 01:

    Basics

Navamsha is the ninth division of a sign. Each navamsha division measures 3° – 20' which is also the one fourth part of a nakshatra called pad or charan. There are 108 navamsha in total. It is also known as Dharmamsha. It is an important divisional chart.

    Parashar Navamsha

Parashar navamsha is cyclical. We have four methods of casting this chart.

    First Method

The counting of navamsha starts from the movable sign of the triad in which the planet is placed in the birth chart. There are four triads namely: fiery, earthy, airy and watery. Each next navamsha occupy next sign in direct order.

    Second Method

For movable signs, the first navamsha occupy the sign itself. For fixed signs, the first navamsha occupy the ninth sign from itself. For dual signs, the first navamsha occupy the fifth sign from itself. The other navamsha follows in direct order.

    Third Method

Multiply the longitude of the planet (including sign) by nine. Expunge multiples of 12 signs. The resultant is the longitude of the planet in navamsha. For example we take Sun placed at 16 deg. 20 minutes in Aries. Multiply 16 deg. 20 minutes by 9. We get 147 degrees. It is four sign completed and current sign is fifth. Sun is in Leo navamsha.

    Fourth Method

Note the number of sign in the previous house to the planet. Multiply this number by nine. Add the number of navamsha occupied by planet. Expunge multiples of 12 from the sum so obtained. The result is the sign occupied by planet in navamsha. For example we take Sun placed at 16 deg. 20 minutes in Aries. Pisces is the previous sign to Aries. Multiply 12 by 9. We get 108. Sun is in fifth navamsha. Add five to 108 to get 113. Expunge 108 and the sign occupied by Sun in navamsha is 5. Thus Sun is in Leo in navamsha.

    Example for Casting of Navamsha

The calculations are demonstrated by first method only. Please adopt the method which suit you.

The lagan is Gemini 14 degree 03 minutes. The first navamsha of Gemini starts from Libra. It is fifth navamsha. Counting five from Libra we get Aquarius. Thus lagan of navamsha is Aquarius.

Sun is in fifth navamsha. Counting five from Aries gives us Leo. Sun goes to Leo in navamsha.

Moon is also in fifth navamsha. Counting for Scorpio starts from Cancer. Fifth from Cancer is Scorpio. Thus Moon is vargottam and occupies Scorpio in navamsha.

Mars is in Pisces in second navamsha. Counting from Cancer we get Leo as the sign occupied by Mars in navamsha.

Mercury is in Pisces. It is in eighth navamsha. From Cancer eighth is Aquarius. Mercury moves to Aquarius in navamsha.

Jupiter is in Leo in eighth navamsha. Counting starts from Aries. Jupiter goes to Scorpio in navamsha.

Venus is in same sign and navamsha as that of Mercury. Venus also moves to Aquarius in navamsha.

Saturn is in fifth navamsha in Gemini. It moves to Libra in navamsha and is exalted.

Rahu is in sixth navamsha in Gemini. The first navamsha is from Libra. Sixth from Libra is Pisces.

Ketu is opposite to Rahu and is in Virgo.

    Pushkar Navamsha

Pushkar navamsha are twenty four. Each sign has two pushkar navamsha and are the special areas of a sign. Any planet placed in this area gets its qualities enhanced and acquire the potential to give good results of its significations. These are the benefic navamsha and are lorded by the benefics in navamsha. Any planet occupying this navamsha goes to the signs of four benefics Jupiter, Venus, Mercury and Moon. Jupiter and Venus have nine each. Moon and Mercury have three each of the 24 pushkar navamsha. No pushkar navamsha falls in the sign of Sun, Mars and Saturn in D9.

Some authors have taken pushkar bhag as pushkar navamsha. We are giving two versions of pushkar navamsha.
