Chapter 01

Classic

Dashamsha is a divisional chart erected from birth chart. It magnifies the tenth house of a horoscope. Tenth house is the karma house and as such this divisional chart is also called karmamsha.

Dashamsha is the tenth division of the horoscope. This chart highlights the results of tenth house. It is studied for professional achievement, career, public image, trends of destiny, honors, success, promotion/ demotions, stress, and earned income by self effort, hobbies and interests.

Parashar Dashamsha

Each sign is divided into 10 equal parts of 3 degrees each. The first Dashamsha is from 0 degree to 3 degrees, second Dashamsha is from 3 to 6 degrees and so on.

For odd signs the first Dashamsha falls in sign itself, the second goes to the second sign in the direct order and so on. For even signs, the first Dashamsha goes to the ninth house from the sign occupied and the others fallow in the direct order.

A ready table for casting dashamsha chart from the birth chart is given below. We will work out the signs occupied by lagan and nine planets in dashamsha based on their longitudes in birth chart.

Example. DOB 30 April 1945. TOB 09.27. POB Delhi

The casting of dashamsha is started from lagan and then all other planets are placed.

1.Lagan. Lagan is at 14 degree 03 minutes. It is in fifth dashamsha. The sign is Gemini. The 5th dashamsha will be Libra.

2.Sun. Sun is in sixth dashamsha in Aries. Sun will move to Virgo in dashamsha.

3.Moon. Moon is in sixth dashamsha in Scorpio. The counting starts from Cancer. The sixth from Cancer is Sagittarius and Moon move to Sagittarius in dashamsha.

4.Mars. Mars is in second dashamsha of Pisces. It moves to Sagittarius in dashamsha.

5.Mercury. Mercury is in ninth dashamsha of Pisces. It moves to Cancer in dashamsha.

6.Jupiter. Jupiter is in ninth dashamsha of Leo. It moves to Aries in dashamsha.

7.Venus. Venus is in ninth dashamsha of Pisces. It moves to Cancer in dashamsha.

8.Saturn. Saturn is in fifth dashamsha of Gemini. It moves to Libra in dashamsha.

9.Rahu. Rahu is in sixth dashamsha of Gemini. It moves to Scorpio in dashamsha.

10.Ketu. Ketu is in sixth dashamsha of Sagittarius. It moves to Taurus in dashamsha.

The dashamsha chart for the example horoscope is given.

Longitudes in Dashamsha

Working of longitudes of lagan and planets in dashamsha chart is based on the fact that 3 degrees of birth chart is one sign in dashamsha. We can derive the longitudes by two methods. In both methods the sign occupied in dashamsha is already decided.

Method 1

Note the degrees and minutes occupied by a planet or lagan in a sign. (Ignore the sign). Multiply the degrees and minutes by 10. Expunge multiples of 30 degrees from the product. The remainder is the longitude in dashamsha. We now calculate the longitudes of lagan and planets in the example chart.

Lagan. Lagan is 14 deg. 03 min. in birth chart. Multiply it by 10. We get 140 deg. 30 min. Expunge 120 deg. And we get 20 deg. 30 min. as the longitude of lagan. The sign is Libra.

Sun. Sun is 16 deg. 21 min. Multiplying it with 10 we get 160 deg. 210 min. Expunging 150 deg. We get 13 deg. 30 min. The sign is Virgo.

Moon. The Moon is at 16 deg. 31 min. multiplying it by 10 and expunging multiples of 30 we get 15 deg. 10 min. as longitude of Moon.

Mars. Mars is at 4 deg. 50 min. multiplying it by 10 and expunging multiples of 30 we get 18 deg. 20 min. as longitude of Mars.

Mercury. Mercury is at 24 deg. 07 min. multiplying it by 10 and expunging multiples of 30 we get 1 deg. 10 min. as longitude of Mercury.

Jupiter. Jupiter is at 24 deg. 45 min. multiplying it by 10 and expunging multiples of 30 we get 7 deg. 30 min. as longitude of Jupiter.

Venus. Venus is at 25 deg. 0 min. multiplying it by 10 and expunging multiples of 30 we get 10 deg. 0 min. as longitude of Venus.

Saturn. Saturn is at 13 deg. 23 min. multiplying it by 10 and expunging multiples of 30 we get 13 deg. 50 min. as longitude of Saturn.

Rahu. Rahu is at 17 deg. 45 min. multiplying it by 10 and expunging multiples of 30 we get 27 deg. 30 min. as longitude of Rahu.

Ketu. Ketu is same as Rahu.

Method 2

In this method, we workout the increment gained by the planet over the completed degrees of dashamsha. Multiply this increment by 10 to get the degrees and minutes of the planets.

Lagan. The completed dashamsha is 12 degrees. The increment is 2 degrees 03 minutes. Multiply by 10. We get 20 degrees 30 minutes.

Sun. The completed dashamsha is 15 degrees. The increment is 1 degree 21 minutes. Multiply by 10. We get 13 degrees 30 minutes.

Moon. The completed dashamsha is 15 degrees. The increment is 1 degree 31 minutes. Multiply by 10. We get 15 degrees 10 minutes.

Mars. The completed dashamsha is 03 degrees. The increment is 1 degree 50 minutes. Multiply by 10. We get 18 degrees 20 minutes.

Mercury. The completed dashamsha is 24 degrees. The increment is 0 degree 07 minutes. Multiply by 10. We get 1 degree 10 minutes.

Jupiter. The completed dashamsha is 24 degrees. The increment is 0 degree 45 minutes. Multiply by 10. We get 7 degrees 30 minutes.

Venus. The completed dashamsha is 24 degrees. The increment is 1 degree 0 minutes. Multiply by 10. We get 10 degrees 0 minutes.

Saturn. The completed dashamsha is 12 degrees. The increment is 1 degree 23 minutes. Multiply by 10. We get 13 degrees 50 minutes.

Rahu. The completed dashamsha is 15 degrees. The increment is 2 degrees 45 minutes. Multiply by 10. We get 27 degrees 30 minutes.

The longitude of planets can be made use for finer predictions and is a wide area of further research.

Dashamsha deities.

The lords of ten dashamsha are the presiding deities of ten directions or the dikpals. The lords of ten directions are Indra, Agni, Yama, Rakshash, Varun, Vayu, Kubera, Ishana, Brahma and Ananta. They are the lords of dashamsha and govern the dashamsha of odd signs in direct order. For dashamsha of even signs their order is reversed.
