    Chapter 1

I already told the others that I don’t know anything. Maggie looked down at the bare metal table, trying her best to ignore the dried blood.

Water dripped from the soiled concrete walls. A dim light flickered.

It felt like the narrow ceiling was closing in.

I’m not with the military, echoed a stern female voice. Her eyes roamed over Maggie's thin face and dark greasy hair. I’ve come to speak with you about a different matter.

Maggie’s heart leapt in her chest.

Perhaps she’d get to live another day?

Tell me, the woman continued. What do you know about your grandfather?

Not much. It was a lie, but it was always best to pretend to know as little as possible. He passed away when I was young.

Did your parents ever tell you that you have a fiancé?

No, you're wrong, Maggie thought, but instead of speaking up, she just shook her head.

"Your grandfather, Lord Roger Hawthorne, had a good standing with the king, said the woman. There was an agreement between the two of them that you would marry my son."

    No way. It can't be….

Maggie looked up to see the weathered face of the queen.

Two decades earlier, the monarch had been a bright young woman with lush blonde hair and a glimmering smile, but years of war and oppression had taken their toll.

The queen's face was covered in wrinkles, her badly bleached hair was brittle, and her dry skin showed signs of malnutrition.

Maggie always assumed that the royal family were granted special rations from the government, but even they appeared to have fallen on tough times.

Many things have changed since then, said the queen. But I’m prepared to honor the engagement.

It seemed like a cruel joke. Someone like Maggie marrying a prince?

But whether or not it was true, Maggie couldn't refuse any opportunity to escape the work camp.

If I agree……. Maggie chose her words carefully. Can you get me out of here?

The queen stiffened. Although the royal family doesn’t wield the influence we once did. I’m sure that we can find a way to get you out. But…

Maggie's heart pounded in her chest.

A royal marriage comes with many responsibilities, said the queen. You must conduct yourself accordingly at all times, and produce an heir as soon as possible. We have no interest in a girl who doesn’t take the role seriously and wastes our time.

Maggie clenched her hands. I’ll do it.

The queen coughed. Don't you need some time to think?

No. Maggie gathered her confidence. As a previous aristocrat, I can think of no better honor than marrying his majesty.

She looked straight into the queen’s eyes.

Please accept me, Maggie silently begged.

The queen coughed and got to her feet. I’ll see what I can do.

    Chapter 2

I vow to honor and obey, muttered Maggie for the hundredth time.

The paper in her hand trembled as she attempted to get her nerves under control. The ceremony hadn’t even started, and she was already a nervous mess.

The guests’ hushed voices echoed from the next room. In less than an hour, all eyes would be on her.

Could she really pull it off? Could an ex-prisoner become a princess?

    Maggie certainly looked the part.

Her dark hair was styled into neat curls which fell down her shoulders, and her manicured nails were painted pale pink. Her long lace dress stank of mothballs, but she looked like an upper class lady who’d never committed a crime in her life.

It was impossible to imagine that the same hands sewed clothes for over twelve hours a day.

I, Margret La- Maggie cursed under her breath. I, Margret Alexandra Hawthorn, take Edward Augustus Felix-

Don’t worry about making any mistakes, said a deep voice from the doorway. There aren’t that many guests anyway.

    Maggie almost dropped the paper.

Standing in the open doorway was Crown Prince Edward, her future husband.

He was dressed in a spotless black suit, with several military medals pinned to his chest. The prince’s black hair was gelled back, and his pale face was neatly shaven. He was taller than she imagined, but his dark eyes held a sadness that Maggie was more
