    Introducing Zadi

She is part zombie, part fairy, with a little bit of robot.

She’s one of the best hunters and makers in the misfit monster community. She loves inventing new items that can be used every day.

    Chapter One

Zadi held her breath as she closed the front door, a recycled lid from an old rubbish bin. The sharp click of the lock set her internal robot parts on edge. She looked around quickly to see if anyone had heard the sound and decided to investigate. Misfit monsters were many things, especially nosey and with super hearing. Part zombie, part fairy, with a little bit of robot, made Zadi who she was—a misfit monster. Unique, quirky, and sometimes fun, just like all the other misfit monsters with their unique blends. It helped them to survive, which was much needed because of their size. They were around the size of a rat, some smaller than a Bilby, and some just bigger than a Blue Wren. And when you lived in a world where things were much larger than you, you had to be careful.

Zadi tilted her head. Did she just see the curtain move at her friend and neighbor’s place, Tamra? Zadi stared at the lopsided window on the side of the old cake mixer, now converted and mis-mashed with other discarded kitchen appliances to make a home. If anyone would notice Zadi getting up early, it would be Tamra. And that was the last thing Zadi wanted. Her cunning plan was to get to the hunting grounds before anyone else this morning.

Zadi froze on the spot, hoping she blended in with the morning shadows. She’d decided last night that if she was going to get the best pickings at the hunting grounds, she needed to get there before the others. Misfit monsters liked to sleep in, so she figured by setting her alarm, which was recycled from a car horn, she would be up and ready to go before any of the others. The discarded car horn was one of the best things she’d found on a recent visit to the hunting grounds, but that was over a month ago. It had taken her a week to convert the alarm, connecting it to an old grandfather clock to become something useful for her. While going to the hunting grounds regularly, she’d not managed to find anything anywhere near as useful. It was rather odd there’d been no deliveries for so long. No one in their town recalled anything like this happening before. This morning would be different.

She continued to stare at the window. The white lace curtains hung perfectly still. Zadi shook her head. I must have imagined the movement. Tamra, part pixie, part goblin, with a little bit of jester, usually made a lot more noise. Zadi couldn’t hear her jester bells.

Zadi adjusted the heavy hessian sack over her shoulder and hobbled down the path from her front door, her irregular robot legs making her gait uneven. She carefully opened the low picket gate that marked the boundary of her home. At least she kept the hinges of the gate well oiled, just like her robot parts, so there was no sound. Still, she glanced over her shoulder, down the dusty street to make sure she wasn’t being followed. There were no lights on in any of the misfit monster homes, including Tamra’s. She smiled, her lips crooked because when the Seamstress had to fix her zombie rotting parts, her lips ended up wonky. The downside of being part zombie and also a misfit monster was they all needed repair, or fixing, or doing up. At least they had each other, even though they could be better at helping each other sometimes. They would go to the Seamstress for help with repairs on themselves and the Carpenter for inanimate repairs and building assistance. It was rumored they were part human, which was preposterous since humans were what the misfit monsters feared most.

Zadi didn’t believe it since the Seamstress and Carpenter were both so helpful and super clever. It was also thought that the Seamstress was part fairy godmother, a very big part at that. And the Carpenter had a bit of mage in him. That was more likely, according to Zadi.

Noticing the brightening blue sky in the east as the sun crept close to the horizon, Zadi hurried along the footpath toward the entrance of the town. Soft pinks smeared across the sky, the extra natural light turning off the streetlamps as she rushed to the other side of the grounds. Her footsteps, thudding on the concrete path, and she hoped the sound wouldn’t wake any of the other monsters.
