Jasmine Fogwell

Jasmine grew up in Norland, Ontario, Canada. She graduated from Heritage College and Seminary in Cambridge, Ontario with a Bachelor of Religious Education. One of her passions is skiing and she is a certified Level 2 ski instructor with the Canadian Ski Instructors' Alliance. Jasmine enjoys being in the mountains, reading, playing soccer, and traveling. When asked to pick one ideal day, she couldn't. Doing the same thing over and over again would get boring. So, three ideal days would be these: Waking up late, slowly sipping coffee all morning, while reading a great novel. Going for an afternoon walk, making up a song on the guitar, then curling up with that novel again in the evening. Teaching skiing all morning, then having a few runs to yourself. In the afternoon, heading to her favourite coffee shop to write that story that has kept her awake for nights on end. Being in the mountains, skiing or hiking. Coming home at the end of an adventurous day, and eating a meal with some great friends.

Chapter 1: Rionzi Breaks the Rules

Saleem sat in the lobby of the inn, staring out towards the forest. He could only see darkness beyond the quaint streetlights. His thoughts wandered. Inside, he was torn. Rionzi DuCrét had a very strict curfew for her walk. In the forty years he and his father had been responsible for her, she had never even thought of disobeying the rules that governed her limited walk in the forest once every two weeks. The penalty for breaking this condition was banishment. Some of the more vocal village people threatened banishment even to Saleem, and he feared his neighbours’ responses if anyone found out she had disappeared—but, on the other hand, he could be free of her if she simply didn’t come back.

For a few brief minutes, this new sense of freedom felt good, but a part of him would deeply miss the old lady. Although they rarely spoke, her presence in the inn, which was a place of constant transition, was a comfort for him. He was fascinated by her, in a way—by her extreme old age, for one thing. Despite her bitter facade, she seemed to hold on to hope. He wasn’t sure what she hoped for, but he could feel it when, on rare occasions, he would run into her.
