    About the Author

    ONE

    The Night Before Sixth Grade.

Brady sat on his bed, staring at his calendar. September third was tomorrow. Which meant the start of sixth grade was tomorrow. Which meant everything was about to change.

Brady’s mom didn’t see it that way. She tried to calm Brady down by saying a new school was not a big deal, but also that it was a great opportunity.

Which one is it? a worried Brady responded to her. Those are two different things!

    Go to bed, Brady.

And so he did. That didn’t mean he was going to fall right asleep. Not while anxious thoughts spun around his head. What would the kids be like? Would everyone hate him? Ignore him? Give him a terrible nickname like Snotface? Oh no—they were going to call him Snotface. It was official.

Another hour of this kind of worry passed. Brady grabbed his pocket diary from the dresser drawer to try to clear his head, but no words came. Finally he lay down in his bed. His blinks started lasting longer and longer, and his eyelids grew heavy. Brady started to fade into slumber, but his mind was still filled with worry. This was the first time Brady would ever sleepwalk. There are all sorts of crazy stories of things sleepwalkers do. Some go into the kitchen to make a sandwich, some go into the living room to play video games, and some leave the house altogether for a midnight stroll.

But Brady didn’t go very far, at first. Brady only made it to the full-length mirror against the wall across from his bed. Brady couldn’t know what he was doing, being sound asleep. Something, however, drove him towards the mirror. It was an unseen force of some kind. The force was dark and gloomy.

Brady was now standing in front of the mirror. He stared at his short, bony figure until
