The Wrong Side of Paradise
June 4, 12:06 a.m.
The Chosen One stood outside the girl's bedroom window—waiting—patiently waiting for the day that she fulfilled his calling. To the Chosen One, the little girl represented his escape from past mistakes, past tragedies, past transgressions—but necessary transgressions
, he mumbled to himself with a cutting smile. And if things went as he thought they would go—must go—were destined to go—God would bless him with emotional and financial freedom beyond his wildest dreams.
The Chosen One had contemplated taking the girl early now that her father would be a free man any time now but decided against changing the plan at this late stage. God had delivered thus far. He must have faith. Tomorrow night would be the last night he would stare at the girl's room—that room with the obnoxious bubble gum pink walls and the night light that dimmed the space to an insufferable shade of pink. Tomorrow night would be the last night he would be forced to stare at the window holding the societal misfit behind it. The following night, he would confiscate the girl from her pink safe-haven for his closing contribution. He had been waiting 6 years for this grand finale. June 6, 6 p.m., he would celebrate the 6th consecutive year of his annual sacrifice mission—the ending of a long journey that would finally come to fruition. After the final sacrifice, God would reward him. He would escape to the fun in the sun forever and be rid of the mental anguish that had weighed him down for so long. This final one would be incredibly special.
He had no reason to believe it would not be successful at this point. Everything had been following a predictable pattern with the first five victims. The first one had some hiccups, but the next two couldn't have gone any better. Then came another bump with the fourth. Last year's victim, number five, had gone smoothly, so if the pattern held, the 6th and final victim would be a tremendous success. The Chosen One believed the two hiccups were simply God's way of keeping him humble and not getting too big for his britches.
Recalling his thoughts of fun in the sun, his fourth victim stuck out in his mind. When he first saw her, she wore a one-piece bathing suit decorated with several unicorns. He hadn't planned on it being her. In fact, he had taken the trip to Maui as a dream get-away vacation prior to coming back home to kidnap number four in Mobile, Alabama. But after being in Napili for only a couple of days, he realized just how easy it would be to kidnap a kid there. So, he extended his stay, checking out of the condo on June 6. The days leading up to the day of the sacrifice, he laid out near the pools and beaches doing a lot of watching and listening. He would sit near families that appeared to have a girl around the age of 6. It was so easy to figure out the ages of most of them. The stupid parents were so naive. They would lie on the beach or at the pool soaking up the sunshine and give their little girls permission to play on their own. Occasionally the parents would check on the kids, but then they would lay back down to get more rays. It was as if they felt like nothing bad could happen in paradise. But they obviously hadn't considered the powers of the Almighty, who was using the Chosen One to fulfill a glorious plan.
It was the same routine every time. The Chosen One simply wandered into the water near them and would start playing with his spongy beach ball. At first, he would play just far enough from them to draw their interest but not so close that they were initially scared off by a grown stranger. As he played, he would toss it up and catch it. The kids were always amazed at how high he could throw it up and still catch it. Every once in a while, he would toss a ball intentionally a little closer to the kids. Once he had their full attention, he would toss it so bad that it would land near them or even on the other side. By this point, the man having fun at the beach had sucked them in. Most grabbed the ball and threw it back to him without hesitation. When that occurred, he would also trip and flounder in the water, which would always draw some laughter.
Thank you!
would be his typical reply when one of the kids would throw it back.
