Strangers in the Night
June 2, 12:06 a.m.
The Chosen One stared at the window the second consecutive night. He was a little giddier tonight than usual. Troubled about something.
Don't get ahead of yourself big fella. You still have three more nights. Then you'll be able to grab your prize and make your final preparations. There's still plenty to get done before then. Stay patient.
Yet, he remained troubled.
The Chosen One talked to himself quite often. It calmed him. He had been anticipating this last girl for an awfully long time. After this one, his life would never be the same again. But, still, he had to stay within himself and remain patient. During the early morning hours of June 6, he'd sneak into that window and take his prize. He had it all planned out. Just stick with the plan.
But The Chosen One was struggling tonight. The girl's father was getting released early from prison. What would that mean? Would the girl even be here at the appointed time to take the girl according to the original plan…God's plan? Maybe she would be with her father. Should he secure her tonight and then just keep her captive until it was time to do the deed?
He took a couple of giant swigs of bourbon and refocused on the window.
Whoa, did he see me?
The Chosen One jerked back reflexively in case he wasn't hidden well enough. Did he see me? Dang it. The brother is still looking…like he sees somebody…like he sees me.
Then the boy left. The Chosen One took a couple more giant swigs.
As the bourbon started kicking in, he recalled the second sacrifice he had given to God. That one had been the easiest by far. She literally fell into his lap. She validated that he was still in God's good graces despite the screw up the previous year. The Chosen One had been hanging around the school off and on for several months trying to figure out which girls were 6 years old. He went to several of the school functions, which he found on the school website. He went to school plays, science fairs, book fairs, muffins with moms, and blended in nicely. He would take any opportunity to sweet talk a girl that looked like she might be around 6 years old.
My, aren't you a big girl. What grade are you in?
Many girls wouldn't answer at all and became scared and ran off looking for their parents. But he was surprised at how many would answer him and talk to him when he flattered them. He wouldn't talk long because he assumed their parents were close by. He only asked enough questions to get their birthday. Once they left, he'd go into the restroom or walk outside, open his stolen copy of the school directory, find their picture, and circle their face. By the time the end of the school year came around, he had dozens of girls circled. At the end of the directory he grouped them by the year they would be 6 years old when it mattered — on June 6.
Towards the end of the year, he started monitoring the girls on his list. He specifically started with the girls that lived closest to the school since they would be most likely to walk or ride a bike. Those would be easy targets. He had pinpointed one girl that walked home every single day. There was one stretch of road that was curved and lined with woods. It provided a perfect opportunity to kidnap one of them. The only trick would be that he'd need to silence the victim quickly because there were many houses nearby to hear screaming. But he had the perfect solution for that. He had learned how to concoct the perfect anesthesia on the internet. He called it his ROTC rag for Rose-On-The-Coffin rag. Every victim of the ROTC rag allowed him to get another rose tattoo over top an existing coffin tattoo on his chest. He thought that was a very clever name indeed, even if it didn't have 6 letters.
He had scoped out the perfect spot in the woods to capture the girl. The night before he went to the spot to envision the capture and have a few drinks to start getting himself in the mood. As he sat quietly in the woods, he heard a girl coming around the corner singing to herself. As she approached the street just outside his position, a rubber ball bounced into the woods and came to a stop directly in front of him. To his surprise, the brave little girl ventured into the dark woods to find her
