    Lesson #1

    Praise and Rejoice

    Lesson Passage:

    Psalm 100

    NRSV

MAKE a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth.

2 Worship the Lord with gladness; come into his presence with singing.

3 Know that the Lord is God. It is he that made us, and we are his; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.

4 Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise. Give thanks to him, bless his name.

5 For the Lord is good; his steadfast love endures for ever, and his faithfulness to all generations.

    Today’s Lesson Story

Today, we will study the poetic words of Psalm 100, which are summed up in verse 1: Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth! We will learn (1) why all of creation should praise the Lord; (2) how to express our praise to God; and (3) when we should lift our praises.

Most kids like to make noise, and Psalm 100 gives us a valid excuse for doing so! Our praise to God, however, is sacred. Joyful praise does not make noise just for the sake of being loud. True praise comes from the heart and is a way to give thanks to God. Praise can be a liturgical act (something that we do in church); but it is also a way of life. Loving God and trusting Him daily to bless and protect us produces an attitude of praise that is reflected in everything we do.

True praise is worship expressed through gladness and joyful song because we know who God is. Verse 3 says, Know that the Lord is God. He is sovereign, supreme, and absolute; and His love for us is matchless. No one knows us better than He does because He created us, and we belong to Him. Maybe you like to draw or paint. When you are finished with your artwork, you are proud of it; you know it was created by your own hands, and you decide where to hang it in your room. God is also proud of His creation; we are His possession, and He gives us purpose in this life. He is the Good Shepherd who loves and guides us; and we, His sheep, are happy to follow Him.

Verse 4 tells us to praise with thanksgiving in our hearts; and one sure way to celebrate God is to praise His name. God’s name has many forms, one of which is Jehovah, a Hebrew name for God. Other names include Jehovah Jireh, meaning The Lord Will Provide and Jehovah Rapha, The Lord Who Heals Me. When we praise God, we thank Him for providing our needs, for healing and protecting us, and for all that He is and all that He does.

For the Lord is good . . . (v. 5). If, one day, we tried to recall all the evidences of God’s goodness, we would never be able to stop! God is good because He wakes us up every morning. He is good because He cares for us, guides us, and protects us, but His goodness is best described through His love, which endures forever. God loves us, no matter what; He will always be there for us, even when we don’t deserve it.

When should we lift our praises? All the time! Verse 5 reminds us that God’s faithfulness toward us continues throughout all generations. If God’s love and faithfulness is eternal, we should be happy to praise Him today, tomorrow, and forever! We can make a joyful noise by singing, clapping, stomping our feet, or snapping our fingers, but the most important thing is that we carry a praise in our hearts so others can see God through our example.

Verse 4 says to enter his gates . . . [and] courts with praise, which can be interpreted as entering the church for praise. We should definitely praise God when we gather together with other Christians, but praising God can be accomplished anywhere. We can praise God in the car, at school, on a walk, or in our bed at night. We have the freedom to praise God anywhere, anytime, and for any reason. And God cherishes every word! God is worthy of our praise!

    Think About It!

It is He who made us, and we are His! (v. 3). We belong to God, not to ourselves, but to our Creator. What does this mean? In some interpretations, it means that we are not the rulers of our lives; He is. In other words, when we decide to do a certain thing or act a certain way, we should first make sure our actions will line up with what He would want us to do. When a classmate asks you to skip school, remind yourself to Whom you belong, and make the right decision. When Math gets difficult, and you are tempted to steal the teacher’s answer sheet, don’t do it. God wants you to remain true, honest, and
