    In the Beginning

    Lesson Passage: John 1:1–14

    NRSV

IN the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

2 He was in the beginning with God.

3 All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into being

4 in him was life, and the life was the light of all people.

5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it.

6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.

7 He came as a witness to testify to the light, so that all might believe through him.

8 He himself was not the light, but he came to testify to the light.

9 The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world.

10 He was in the world, and the world came into being through him; yet the world did not know him.

11 He came to what was his own, and his own people did not accept him.

12 But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God,

13 who were born, not of blood or of the will of the flesh or of the will of man, but of God.

14 And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a father’s only son, full of grace and truth.

    Today’s Lesson Story

Today’s scripture takes us to a time that is as far back as anyone could imagine when, in the very beginning, Jesus was already in existence! In John 1:1, Jesus is called logos, the Greek word meaning message, speaking, or words. Jesus came to earth as a man to save us; but as the Word, He communicated the very nature of God. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God (v. 1). How do you communicate an important message to another person? Although we use certain body language to enhance our communication, we generally communicate by doing more than holding our mouths a certain way, gesturing with our hands, or grunting. We talk with the use of words. Likewise, God needed to communicate His message of salvation to mankind, so Jesus became the Word by which the Father could talk to His children!

When we look at verse 1, it is pretty simple. The first phrase In the beginning was the Word simply means that at the very beginning of time, Jesus was present. The second phrase and the Word was with God means that at the very beginning of time, God the Father and Jesus the Son were both present, together. The third phrase and the Word was God means that both the Father and Son were present, but together, as one-and-the same. Remember the Trinity? God is one holy being who is made of three parts: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Each of the three parts is separate, but there is only one God, altogether.

We know that God is the Creator of all things and
