    Find Delight

    Psalm 100

    Background Scripture: Psalm 100

MAKE a joyful noise to the LORD, all the earth.

2 Worship the LORD with gladness; come into his presence with singing.

3 Know that the LORD is God. It is he that made us, and we are his; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.

4 Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise. Give thanks to him, bless his name.

5 For the LORD is good; his steadfast love endures forever, and his faithfulness to all generations.

    A Psalm of Thanksgiving

There are many objects in our life that provide us the opportunity to praise and find delight. We find that opportunity in our friends and family, as well as the things that we possess, such as the house that we live in or the car that we ride in. But how do we evaluate those things and decide what has more value and is worthy of our praise? Is it the admiration of your friends? Is it the designer label that it carries? In today’s lesson, we examine what the writer says about putting our joy in the Lord. Psalm 100 highlights God as the object of the earth’s praise and joy.

Psalms is a large collection of prayers, songs, and poetry that expresses deep feelings and passions. The writers of the Psalms lead us through the deep valleys and the high peaks of our human experience, but they always lead us to praise for our God, the Creator. Psalm 100 is a particular psalm of praise. It is placed behind a group of royal Psalms and can be included in the group. It is considered a Psalm of Thanksgiving, and its entire structure is one of praise. This descriptive Psalm contains a worship response. Because it is considered a Psalm of Thanksgiving, it is referring to a public acknowledgment of the Lord by thanking Him and worshiping Him. This psalm begins by telling us that we should worship the Lord, and it ends by telling us that the Lord’s goodness and mercy will last forever. That is a reason for thanksgiving right there!

Song of Praise for the Lord’s Faithfulness to His People

Psalm 100 is a typical psalm of praise and worship. First, it issues an invitation to praise the Lord, and then it gives the reasons to praise the Lord. Throughout this psalm, the main thought is to praise and worship. This psalm begins with the instructions to Make a joyful shout and it is a clear command for public praise for the Lord. It does not qualify the statement of who should be making the joyful shout. So, that means that everyone should give a joyful shout. This command does not list the people of Israel as the ones who should be making a joyful shout. In fact, it states that all the earth should shout with joy to the Lord. God is clearly the Lord over all the earth and as such He deserves praise from all the earth, not just the people of Israel. The Lord did not just create the people of Israel, but He created every one of us in His image. We are urged to worship the Lord with a full heart and with
