Author

Michael A. Susko

Ever since his youth, the author read science fiction, and his imagination has often pictured future worlds. In this work, he combines dream analysis and the study of empire to show how ancient rites might combine with scientific means to make for a totalitarian world. In this re-envisioning of 1984 world, the year 2084 is fast coming upon us.

    CHAPTER ONE

    SHED SKINS

Isought the Darkwood . Many have tried before. The insane venture there and find her nature doubled. She vents her fury upon them, yet is large enough to absorb their wounds, for she had both beauty and cruelty.

I left, heading for the darkness, dispensing of my clothing. Best to be seen as having nothing to steal, although they might try to take one’s skin. I  felt childlike, feminine, my armor stripped away. Exposed, vulnerable, sexed all over, I ran through the forest. When I rested, I lay in leaves, rubbed them over my body and darkened myself with earth.

My hair became knotted, stood out wildly. I learned sounds, smells, sights, how to hide in earthen holes, to follow the beast’s ways. But they still knew I was not one of them. Perhaps it was my fear.

The energy that coursed through me made it feel like green came out of my mouth and eyes, even my bowels. I was green through and through, my blood coursing like  green sap. The trees were like me, parasitically entwined into the deep earth, for every night I made hollows in the dark earth. Insects bit me, but the stings helped form my second skin. I was transforming, becoming other, even to myself.

The old skin was scarred over, worked over, as the new tough skin formed. I liked my new skin. It marked me as new, although my mind lingered behind four walls and white printed pages.

Out of my body or mind, this greenness took form. Whether magically by some unknown magician who worked the requisite spells, or whether the spirit of nature was freed, a power had given life to these green excretions. A sense of Other grows out of the wild, although it stayed its distance. The human must invent it, or madness awaits, or worse––to be reduced to a semblance or specter of oneself.

This thing was here, but it did not speak. It moved as a person of sorts, keeping to the fringes of my sight. And if I stared hard, it became still, rooted as one of the trees. It was like an Other made for me, but I was not pleased. It was not my companion, but some distant watcher.

I took to the deeper portions where light hardly penetrated, and my body deepened into wildness. My skin became callused, my body sensitized. Hair began to sprout all over my body, stimulated by the stings and juices. All my senses became more acute, and a vast space opened in my head––a space that had become filled by other’s words from other
