About this series

These oral histories describe transformative experiences which led persons to become advocates for reform, artists or practitioners in the mental health system. They include psychiatric survivors and professionals, many of whom have been leaders in the movement. These stories show the path to true healing—how, despite fierce resistance, persons found their voice and identity. Pioneered by those who faced wounding experiences, the way to deep healing can be found in these lived stories. We invite you to take a journey which conveys an uncommon psychological wisdom.

Caseness and Narrative contrasts two ways of trying to help persons in emotional distress. The first, called Caseness, sees signs of distress as symptoms without significant meaning, makes a diagnosis which allows the psychiatric system to name the experience, and then uses strong methods to minimize or stop symptom expression. The second way, called Narrative, allows the story to unfold, uses the structure of narrative to frame the process, and then—to avoid the person becoming stuck––supports the transformative nature of the lived experience. We invite you to a greater and deeper understanding, which may help you, family and friends support each other going through difficult emotional experiences.

This book takes a critical look at psychiatric research, factors which compromise its integrity and which may steer us from paths that lead to healing. The lack of informed consent is a major problem in research, in which subjects are in emotional distress. This work suggests an alternative vision, one backed by scientific research and which can be lifesaving for persons going through crisis. Read this work if you want to take an independent look at the science involved, and a more effective way to help people.
