Haikus and Photos Series

This book brings together photographs of flowers which have both focus and softness. They evoke a haiku, in which the author invites us to explore the image further: to see what's before us, to make a connection with the image's surround, and to raise a question of something more. Flowers and Haikus offer us a meditation upon one of the outstanding beauties of nature.

The author visited the New River region as a second home and felt a calling to photograph the river, especially at dawn. A view of the river at different seasons makes for this collection. The New River flows North and is the oldest river of this hemisphere. You are invited to visit this ancient beauty.

The author shares photographs from the famous Big Sur coast of California. To these, he adds twists with Haikus which summon imagery and meaning from designs found in rocks, ocean waves, and clouds. 

This selection of images comes from Yosemite, one of America's original wildernesses, that all should see if they wish to know the original beauty of this land. A haiku paired with each photograph seeks to bring out more fully the beauty and meaning of each image. You are invited to a brief but impactful tour that reveals the delicate power that is Yosemite's.

This work features waterbirds from a mangrove preserve in Florida. The photographs are paired with Haikus which invite us to look closer and in a deeper way at the image. The  tension and confusion with reflections end up creating surprising harmonies.

This work comes from a train trip taken by four brothers into the Canadian Rockies. It was the last wish of a brother who had terminal cancer to experience its beauty and excitement. The images are paired with haikus which invite us to delve deeper into the image.

Haikus and Photos document street life in Vienna, where people become colorful art,amid buildings and art that graces the city. Historical buildings become backdrops, to people more important than the structure itself. This set of photographs and Haikus documents the author's trip to Berlin some years ago. In these he explores signs of the city's dark past and its more recent history of light in a reunified Berlin. His friend, who had escaped from the iron curtain and headed a cancer institute, served as his guide. Examine this book to consider the dramatic sides of Berlin.

The photographs for this work come from Eastern Europe, where the author's grandparents lived. For many years Slovakia was cut off from the West, behind the Iron Curtain. After the fall of the Soviet Union, the author located his family and was taken on tour by his cousins. An array of castles dot the land, and remnants of hamlets  survive where his ancestors lived. This book is an invitation for us to return to the "old country" and feel the energy of our origins.

Often there is a hint of something more, suggested by light....

Two visits to Antietam, on a windy fall day and a cold winter day. Golden tassels criss-crossing, a lone corn bending, a  fawn running, and a light flaring --- all serve as signs. A sense of spirits becomes present in the wind and silence.

These images of plants, often taken near water, attempt to capture their essence through the lens of abstraction. We come to discern that when geometry is highlighted with living form, a deep seated beauty is discovered. The Haikus in this work seek to bring out this unexpected dimension

Amid the row houses of Sandtown Baltimore, with a 1/3 vacancy rate, is an urban farm. This garden and ts associated activities offers beauty and hope to the neighborhood community. In an event the author attended, people made bouquets from the garden's flowers to take back home. Hidden riches from unexpected places comes back to us in more ways than one.   

  These photos and haikus explore the conjunction of fractal shapes and smooth pueblo surfaces. A spirituality is summoned by nature and the humble presence of mission churches, houses, and downtown architecture of Santa Fe. The theme was inspired by a rock seen in a gift shop-- Labradorite, known as a dreamer's stone,

Some twenty years ago, the author visited Monticello in which the sky or the universe smiled on that day. Monticello opens a sense of wonder to those who visit  and embraces the paradox of the nation's founding, how  enlightenment and slavery existed side by side. Finally, after an extensive read of American history, the author pens these haikus and offers this glimpse of Monticello's double vision.

A trip to New York means the experience of heights, where tall buildings frame all we see. These structures can uplift the spirit and meld opposites. A boy in blue, undergoing his own growth spurt, makes appearances as a compliment to the surround. Come on the unique journey that only New York City can offer.
