She was born in Singapore, grew up in Kingston upon Hull, UK, and studied zoology at the University of Oxford, where she was also awarded a PhD for her research on intracellular symbionts in aphids.     I once heard a well-known football (soccer) player describe himself as being vegan during the season. Apparently, he gives up meat and milk for the sake of his health and fitness, though he does sometimes eat fish (and I bet he wears leather boots, too). His interviewer seemed to find the concept of veganism amusing, praised the player for having the gumption to abstain from foods he loves, and even instigated a listener phone-in on the subject: "What would you give up for your team to win the title this season?"
