Wendy A.M. Prosser lives in Oxfordshire, UK with her husband, cats, and many interests including wildlife gardening, Egyptology, cosmology, particle physics, and learning other languages. She was born in Singapore, grew up in Kingston upon Hull, UK, and studied zoology at the University of Oxford, where she was also awarded a PhD for her research on intracellular symbionts in aphids. After university, Wendy worked in market research before moving into publishing. She is now a freelance science editor.

Introduction: What is a Vegan, Anyway?
According to The Vegan Society, the term vegan
was coined in 1944 by their founder Donald Watson, who described veganism as the beginning and end of vegetarian
[1]. But what does that mean, exactly?
I can’t speak for all vegans of course, but I think most would agree that our philosophy respects the rights of all sentient life – both human and non-human. Reverence for life is what motivates many vegetarians, too, but there’s more to respect than eating meat-free. And for vegetarians who realize this problem, the
