About this ebook

This novel is about the creation of small city-states, typically with only 50,000 citizens who foster and enjoy the fruits of a truly democratic society. This Micronation has no socialist-style welfare programs. Indeed, each resident is screened for self-sustaining talents and wealth. Four island nations are created in order to spread the tenants of a true democracy around the globe. This is done because every Socialist State ultimately fails due to undelivered promises.

The principal character, Matt Flynn, is an entrepreneur, salesman and a former American President who successfully brought the country out of an economic depression created by the Socialists. Together with his business partner, Yousif Latif, a Prince of Dubai, four island utopias are created making personal fortunes for the founders, investors and ultimately Micronation residents.

The ultra-modern metropolises are developed on islands near urban centers for security and work force purposes. The islands are transformed into green environments surrounding gleaming new buildings much like the modern-day cities of Dubai and Singapore. Flynn’s invention, the anti-gravity, multi-function Turbopod or T-Pod is the primary mode of transportation, some of which are autonomous. The city’s energy sources are solar and wind with virtually no carbon footprint.

A controversial Citizens Processing Center (CPC) screens for applicants who can afford to live there and who are willing to work and contribute to society, even in retirement. A small number of time-limited “self-help” programs are available. Long-term welfare recipients need not apply for citizenship. Before long the life style is so attractive and the list of applicants is so long, that a host country is forced to expand the Micronation to meet the needs of the surging Democratitis.

The novel ends with a poignant scene where the billionaires uncover what really makes them happy.

    KEY BISCAYNE

Matt and Heather Flynn were having breakfast by the swimming pool behind their Spanish-style mansion in Key Biscayne when Heather asked, What do you do now, honey? You’ve been out of public office for three months, and you’re bored!

The Red Box has revolutionized transportation on land, on the sea, in the air and even in space, she continued. We’re multibillionaires. You’ve earned three Presidential Medals of Freedom and even been president to fix the economy and steer our nation away from Socialism. So what’s next, my dear?

Matt put down his cup of coffee, put his hand on Heather’s and said, I want to export democracy for fun and profit.

What do you mean? Heather asked with a reflective look on her face.

Matt quickly replied, I want to build island utopias founded on democratic principles, using the Red Box in creative, new ways for an ultramodern metropolis we can then franchise around the globe.

Heather smiled and said, Honey, you sure think big. You continue to amaze me after four decades of marriage!

Matt took another sip of coffee and in a confident voice said, We will establish a nonprofit entity to serve as the general contractor. It will offer shares in a profitable subsidiary on major stock exchanges. The initial seed funding will come from a group of our friends, including folks from around here and Prince Latif and Nikki Villefrance and their friends. I’ve been looking at maps and probably will start with a land parcel at Camp de Mar northwest of Palma on the island of Mallorca off the coast of Spain. Let’s plan a meeting here by the end of the month with people we trust.

Sounds like a plan, my love, Heather responded with genuine excitement in her voice.

Three weeks later on a sunny Friday, the guests began arriving for a working weekend. The Flynns welcomed:

    • Their major business partner and friend, Prince Yousif Latif from Dubai and his aide, Katie Flynn (no relation to Matt or Heather)

    • Nikki Villefrance and her daughter, Jackie, from Monaco

    • Senior cruise ship captain Thomas Catfish Crowley

    • Win Parker and Janice Griffith from Bermuda

    • The Flynns’ son, Rory, and his wife, Lily, from Belize

    • John Foley, internationally acclaimed urban architect

    • Reiner Strassburg, Swiss banker

    • Ben Miles, large-scale program manager

    • Harvey Rubinstein, investment guru

    • Tom Fenton, Red Box production manager

    • Three couples, billionaire real estate developers and members of the Key Biscayne Yacht Club

A reception for the guests was held at 6 p.m. in the library. Over cocktails, conversation buzzed about the Flynns’ new project. After all, everything Matt and Heather had done over the past 30 years had been wildly successful.

Promptly at 7, dinner service was announced, and the guests moved to the garden tent for a sumptuous seven-course meal. Matt welcomed his guests with a champagne toast: Each of you will have a vital role in my proposed new venture, which will be detailed during four meetings this weekend. Dinner will be here again tomorrow and at the yacht club on Sunday, he said. There will be time to enjoy our fair Key and the Miami area. Several Turbopods will be here for your use. Our Gulfstream will be available early on Monday for a trip up the East Coast to New York City. Please renew your friendships tonight. Cigars and cognac will be available in the library at 10 tonight and every night. And, finally, let me pique your interest in our project by stating that we will create a revolutionary new franchise for global fun and profit. Bon appétit!

Each guest smiled his or her approval. Several clapped and shouted: Bravo!

The next morning the guests finished breakfast at 9 and took their places at round tables on the lawn by the swimming pool. Several clutched their coffee mugs as Matt got up to speak.

"This morning I’ll describe my concept and provide elements of my rationale for discussion. This afternoon, from 2 until 3:30, I’ll detail my criteria for site selection. Tomorrow morning we’ll discuss the elements of a prototype franchise. In the afternoon, we’ll detail a cost ledger and how the project will be quite profitable. At the close of the meeting, I’ll suggest preliminary assignments for each of you, should you want to be involved. The first stage of the project will take three years.

"Several of you may not be able to take an active role due to other priorities and responsibilities. There is no pressure to participate. However, each of you could play a vital role in the success of the venture. And should you choose not to be active in the venture, you’ll still be an ambassador for what we’re trying to accomplish. You will also benefit from public stock appreciation. I hope that’s crystal clear to all of you." Nodding heads of approval were seen at each table.

Very well then. Let’s begin the presentation, Matt said as he motioned to Heather to bring up the first slide on a screen in front of the gazebo. The title was, EURANO: An Urban Paradise.

Ladies and gentlemen, please allow me to introduce my vision of a utopian metropolis, Matt continued.

The second slide showed an ultramodern city dominated by glass-covered skyscrapers, green spaces and Turbopods—or T-Pods—zooming all around. It was immediately clear to the audience that nothing like it existed on earth. Matt continued, It’s revolutionary in scope and practice, and founded as a constitutional democracy in a most livable environment.

The next slide highlighted many of the key features of this new urban paradise:

    • A non-Socialist city-state which would petition the United Nations for status as an independent nation.

    • A very limited number of citizens, approximately 50,000, all of whom would have to pass a detailed background check, much like a high military clearance.

    • No toleration of wards of the state. All citizens must possess entrepreneurial work skills and be able to support themselves and their families, even in retirement.

    • Few fossil fuels allowed. Most energy would come from solar, wind and geothermal sources.

    • Buildings built upon solid bedrock to support the tall structures.

Smart buildings with at least one-sixth of the surface covered with greenery or vegetation.

    • Buildings connected by skywalks from the second floor in all directions to minimize ground-level pedestrian traffic.

    • Omnipresent configurations of the Red Box-based Turbopods.

    • Autonomous drones used extensively.

    • Underground farms as the primary source of food.

    • Underground high-speed trains to connect all key locations and venues.

    • High-speed Aquaclippers to provide sea service to nearby nations.

    • Rainwater reservoirs to minimize harsh chemicals in the water supply.

    • A security system that includes smart sensors on the ground, drone observation and satellite monitoring.

    • All wiring underground for total, secure wideband communications.

    • Massive recycling centers to provide clean power, eliminate trash.

    • No prisons; all offenders deported to the host country or exiled within 24 hours.

    • Medical clinics and hospitals supported by low monthly fees from residents; euthanasia supported at all medical locations.

    • Rooftop T-Pod landing pads commonplace.

    • All citizens own their residence/apartment with a small plot of land for gardening to help ensure individual
