About this ebook
This book reflects my continued interest in the Volunteering and Community services. I was a member on the Board of the Harbor foundation for the retarded; The Rotary Clubs of the cities I resided in, The Battered Womans Aid group, and The Art Center. I was also keenly involved in and organized the 50th birthday of the city of Palos Verdes, and 10th anniversary of the formation of the city of Ranch Palos Verdes. From that I catapulted to Politics and was in the inner circle of the Republican followed by Democratic Party. The chapters like the Politics of Convenience Upset the Balance of Power; the Pendulum Theory; and the Cyclical Theory are the products of what the real situations were.

Born in India 85 years ago. The British dished out my birthplace to Pakistan as a parting gift. Till then sun never used to set on the British Empire but these days it hardly rises there. That made my family and I, a refugee from 1947 onwards. Decided to become a world class citizen. Traveled all over the globe from age 26 to date. Been in USA permanently since 1977. Delayed writing my memoirs, till pushed by teachers of my grandkids at community service centers. Friends like Bashar, the rich Lebanese who was mesmerized by my daring story of saving his countryman from the gallows in Libya, so he could escape 200 miles in the dead of the night to safety into Chad. He also wanted me to publish right away. Finally our joint friend, the well-known actor, and a noble soul Sydney Poitier, gave me two books authored by him and said I must be true and open. The common link between Bashar, Sydney and I, is the desire to help others through community service and volunteer work for non-profit charities. They also knew how I have come out unscathed from the 2008-market downturn and the severe recession caused by drying up of credit, job losses, and declining Housing Market. They said publishing my life story would help build the much-needed Faith amongst those suffering from economic depression. A pioneer always has the courage to undertake new challenges, they declared. I had an Engineering background, and graduated twice. First B.Sc. from an American Campus in Lahore, Second from University of London, in Electrical and Mechanical Engineering, in 1948 (a 56 month course in 18 ½ months, with scholarships.) I received the Diplomas from the Queen Mother and her uncle at the Royal Albert Hall; Sir Thomas Beecham conducted the Orchestra. Only 26 were successful, and I had the honor of a dancing swirl with shy Princess Elizabeth (the present Queen of England,) because Princess Margaret quickly tapped my shoulder and whisked me away, to dance with her.

A remarkable memoir by an Indian American writer who has captured through his life, a multidimensional slice of the twentieth century starting with pre-partition India and ending in the current decade. It is a fascinating story of a many-faceted well-traveled man: a brilliant engineer by training, an artist, political analyst, economist, philosopher, historian, entrepreneur and family man. Chapters are filled with vivid commentaries and meetings with internationally renowned politicians and celebrities. Fantastic reading!

PROLOGUE
Since 1977 after my landing at J.F.K airport, in this wonderful country, I had several opportunities to freely exchange my views with so many enlightened people. I met some of them during my social work assignments. I came across others at work, at parties, at school, at random huddle-up meetings. I was quick to learn that this land of the FREE & BRAVE is also a Land of Opportunities. These opportunities had to be earned. There was no discrimination against immigration. USA also gave shelter and political asylum to certain Pro American freedom fighters in other countries that they supported. This resulted in the formation of little Havana, little Italy or little Viet Nam. However INA introduced a quota system when exodus of immigrants, tortured by pernicious marauders, suffering from religious persecution, and political injustice of totalitarian regimes flooded the Staten Island.
Italians and Germans came first, followed by the Irish after Gorta-The Potato Famine.
The system was also based on preferences for family reunion. The first preference for immigration was to the wife and kids of the resident immigrant, followed by the professionals needed for country’s progress. I was concerned about my 2 daughters of impressionable ages, getting influenced by the hippies! I actually met a nice looking 18 years old American girl, soliciting for ten rupees ($0.25), in exchange for sex. I paid her to get the accurate story of her background. She was the only child of a multi millionaire, but chose to come to India in search for TM. She was drugged and disoriented. By then I was convinced against emigration altogether. This decision resulted in the perfect upbringing of both my daughters, and in-turn allowed them to brilliantly conduct their motherhood dreams. Both of them and our son-in-laws are doing enormously well. The grandchildren have achieved Doctorate, and/or are flourishing into MBAs, and Medical Profession. Following greetings from them to me, on my 83rd birthday, clearly suggests that they escaped the hippie hypnosis. I quote here their birthday greetings verbatim:
"We can honestly boast that our grandfather is our best friend + Great Inspiration. We know of no one who possesses so much knowledge of the World History, Arts, and Sports-A TRUE Renaissance MAN.
We look up to him for help in all our endeavors- with Love, respect, and gratitude. We hope he writes his memoirs!"
Jaya received an invitation to join the Jefferson College in Philadelphia, and Deepika has just received a Ph.D. in clinical psychology.
Going back to Bombay, I remained a volunteerd in community service and for social work for the next 12 years. I joined our Chief Engineer’s Group in performing ‘Pantomimes-On-Stage,’ to raise funds for the British and American Women’s Associations. Most of the themes were the
Rock–n-Rolls and popular Beetles music of the up and coming Liverpool Band. The venue was the Garden Stage at Lady Duggen’s Bungalow in the Malabar Hills. Her husband made his riches as an eye surgeon. He reminded me of little frail male nurse Mathra Das near my birthplace MOGA, who with his gifted miracle touch rose up to the level of a world famous eye-surgeon. One day his peak performance touched a record performance of 50 operations an hour, single-handed. He possessed no sophisticated electronic devices and was awarded the title of an honorary Doctor.
I was nominated to the Board of the Breach Candy Hospital, on behalf of Burmah Shell Refineries. This Board already included the British Deputy High Commissioner, the Council General of the American Embassy in Bombay, the Swedish Ambassador, and the chairman of the Metal Box company. The American Council General became a close family friend. He used to visit us when he came to play Golf at the nearby Greater Bombay Golf Club in Chembur. He loved the full blown Indian Chappaties with fresh cream, and used to bring a few Frankfurters from his Canteen for us. He appreciated my useful service for the American Community in Bombay and admired my ranking in Burmah-Shell Refineries. However when our Prime Minister Indira Gandhi introduced the pro Russian Totalitarian Act into law to suppress free capitalism, he urged me to migrate to America. I asked him, if I could qualify for a Green Card after refusing it unceremoniously in 1965. He conformed that on the Quota system my name is right at the top, because of non-utilization. He called his Visa department guy up to his office. After the usual introductions and strict adherence to the formalities, I received my visa documents for entry to USA. He was also instructed to deliver an actual Green Card, to me at the port of entry, while the guy was on vacation in his St Louis home. So on April 15th 1977, I received my actual Green Card at the J.F.Kennedy Airport in New York. It was indeed a great relief from the usual 6 months wait.
I have come across Personable, Political, and Pesky Personalities in my life, and my story has a lot to do with them and my involvement in the social and progressive fabric of the vibrant American Society. The major push, which drifted my wife and I towards volunteer work, has been to offer the needy, a hands-down help. We achieved this by:
a) Influencing those who HAVE to part a little for the needy HAVE-NOTS.
b) Working in the local Rotary Clubs, Art Center,
Foundation for the Retarded, and S.E.A
Battered Women’s Associations.
Sidney Poitier gifted me 2 books published by him. He wished, and I quote," May the wind beat your back in All your undertakings. And
May the most you wish for, be the least you receive from a long Happy and Useful Life."
The whole group paid serious attention to my
Story and were unanimous in suggesting that I must write a Book, to propagate my experiences and ideas. They told me that it would help build the much-needed Faith amongst those suffering from economic depression, started in part by the sinking of the housing market.
This book runs into several chapters.
The chapter on the Pendulum Theory
states that the presidents from two main parties have been sharing the WhiteHouse alternatively as the pendulum swung in their favor. Election system is very costly and the part spent by the public has been an avoidable waste. Yet the elected president has seldom won by popular majority. Most Whitehouse occupants had personal riches. It shows that a poor man has slim chances of becoming a president. With the advent of Social Media’s like the Facebook things might improve a little, but the engine which drives the Government and the grease that lubricates its wheels is Borrowed Money.
Thus the Debt and interest on it is increasing every minute, 24/7. "The Govt. has been the biggest Lender And Spender of money which they do not even own! An indirect effect of over use of paper, made out by pulping trees,
Along with hot and foul gas emissions from vehicles and industrial giants has melted glaciers south of the border down Antarctica way. That in turn became a death knell to millions of penguins and other innocent creatures. These Mountains of ice turned into rapids of ocean water submerging parts of certain islands, a lessening and damaging process which will devour things on its way at a geometric proportion in centuries belonging to our great grand children and their future generations. In the chapter on Obama and the First Lady,
I have described his first 2 years of Presidency, and included information on other recent Residents of the White House. I have openly and honestly given my opinions of Washington Politics and the inability of the Change Obama sang
Yes we Can," about, during his election campaign. He must get credit for his smartness in using the social media of the Facebook. This may attract a $1,000,000,000 for his 2012 Election Campaigns.
The hope Obama wants to instill would need an all out effort by people like us.
People having the courage, clarity of mind, daring sense of responsibility, personal integrity, and the spiritual strength.
People with personality traits such as perseverance, persistence, progressive and analytical discipline.
People with calm professional patience and willingness to succeed in fighting back the onslaught of evil forces.
With the growing foreclosures resulting from, Sub-prime Borrowings, and the Greatest Credit defaults of the century, many Americans have lost their homes-the American Dream!
Banks failed because they had taken unlimited risks. They issued unsecured loans to people without genuine income, lowest credit scores for homes with overblown appraised values.
They had nothing left because the property values fell down to realistic levels and Mortgages were dead as the name applies (mort=death).
They had literally cut the branch of the tree they were sitting on. And the Government bailed them out by paper money, Govt. never had!
So they printed $ bills at the same time borrowing real money from other countries whose currencies shot up against the Green Back! This in turn raised the food, clothing, and gasoline prices for people who had lost their jobs.
The Government coffers dried up leading to bankruptcy in some European countries. With the linked world economies, stock markets tumbled.
This really hurt me, for example at one time in 2008; I had a paper loss of two million dollars.
This was the result of financial downturn and U.S. debt reaching tsunami proportions.
It spread globally, with world trade and import export of products, such as food, metals, gold, iron, materials of war, currency exchange and much more. Remember we are not as isolated as WE WERE during FDR days.
This unending saga of economic and financial disasters raised the ugly head of unemployment in 2008, 10 years after the last debacle.
The solution in part was to pump in billions of $s in stimulus packages mainly to pull the Auto And banking/Insurance industries from the quick sands they were sinking in, fast- under the TOO BIG TO FAIL theory! It may be the unions who voted for Obama, that influenced his decisions to honor the GM retirement benefits for the old workers, which cost 5 times more than hiring new replcements. This in turn increased the unemployment levels!
My own income from my printing business had been dropping with the advent of home computers and portable 3-in-1 copiers/printer/fax-machines and internet resulting in our decision In April 2010 to sell the Print Shop (started in 1984.) We saved on rent and other expenses. We are continuing with 90% of Business as usual. This shows once more that my grit; guts and progressive strategy saved the day. Our daughter Kavita congratulated us and wrote a note and I quote verbatim:
Dear Papa,
"A pioneer always has the courage to undertake new challenges and is never afraid to make tough decisions." You have displayed this character through the vision and strength necessary to move our family here in 1977. That vision is the root behind what our family represents. Your accomplishments in life are a guiding light for your children and grandchildren to follow. We look at your next step with pride and admiration, as a guiding light has never shinned brighter. We love you… from (Mehtas and Chopras.) Over the last 18 months, w.e.f. Jan 2009, I spent hours-researching stock market, to build up a recession- resistant portfolio. This allowed me to keep my head above water and come out unscathed from the current disaster in the American economy.
There are several chapters in this book but the most relevant has been chosen as THE TITLE OF THIS BOOK I.e.
"Politics of Convenience Upset
The Balance of Power."
I always use my middle name (Gopal) in signing as an artist on all my paintings. I will do the same as the author of this book with a LITTLE TWIST,
I.e. –—Go Pal.

The Golden Sparrow
India, the Golden Sparrow, was also called the Jewel of the East.
The Plunderers,
of all countries of the world eyed it as a prize catch.
The international traders were keen to rob it’s riches, jewels, stones, natural resources, including gold, silver, over the centuries. The Greek and Roman merchants were deeply involved with the Indian commerce, until they were cut-off by the Mohammedan Powers. Then came the Arabs in their dhows, and made significant progress in the commerce between India and Europe, but these exceedingly profitable opportunities fell into the hands of the Portuguese, French and most of all the Dutch. They later established the East India Company. These nations waged battles to capture ports and landing sites in the Indian coastline.
However, the foxy Englishman John Mildenhall, convinced Emperor Jehangir to grant free trading powers, to the East India Company formed by Clive in 1600 AD. The Brits were quick to learn that the Indians always fight with each other and can never team-up to fight the outsiders. They took advantage of this lack of unity, and we had to pay heavy price for it till mid twentieth century. They slowly took over the country under the pretext of protecting the Moguls against French, Portuguese, and Dutch. They systematically got rid of all other Europeans, using their tactics, statesmanship and better business acumen.
It was easy for them to get rid of the Moguls, as the quality of their dynasty degenerated, and after they won the Plassey war, and slowly conquered Bengal, through intrigue and economic drain. After dealing a decisive blow to the French, The British East India Company was in full control of the upper Ganges plains.
In the south the, Anglo Mysore war ended in peace treaty with Tipoo Sultan, who was in league with the French. Mysore was now at the disposal of the British. However Napoleon Bonaparte’s attack on Britain, gave William Pitt an excuse to collect funds from the wealthy States, under the new law of Subsidiary Alliance,
with the nawab of Hyderabad, Marathas, and other Indian Princely states. This gave the Governor General extreme powers to take over their entire administration and funds, if he was dissatisfied with them on any account. Basically the Company’s domination spread from sea to shining seas, across the base of the whole Indian Peninsula. The excuse was that it is protection money. After grabbing their total collections from their subjects, as taxes, they were given small portion for their expenses and upkeep.
In realty it was the British Strategic Naval Power that resulted in defeating the mighty Spanish Armada (= David vs. Goliath). In almost the same way, capturing of 4 Indian trading vessels, from Gujrat to the Red Sea, Middleton of the East India Company created an aura of awe that led to the British supremacy. However Clive was the real architect, of building the British Empire in India. He reduced Dutch to submission in 1759 and quickly closed the irregularities of his interference by accepting compensation from the Dutch. India’s prominence on the Silk Road, its fertile land, and the cheap labor growing by geometric proportion, were some of the attractions for the aggressive colonizers!
Centuries ago, people used horse, or bullock carts, and migrated in lands alongside or adjacent to the banks of largest rivers like Ganges, Jamuna. They settled in small villages and large townships! There were no faster transportation systems.
The main arteries of the old India were two largest rivers, as they defined the Defuse Map of India. The highest mountain peaks of Himalayas really protected our Motherland, on the North from the Russians, Chinese, the Moguls, the Greeks, the Iranians, the Turks, the Aryans, the Teubelanes, and Mongols like Genghis Khan, to name a few! To enter or attack India, one had to discover a few vulnerable passes through the treacherous and rugged mountain ranges of the Northwest frontier provinces of India.
The purest, most handsome, and high cheekbone Aryans (still found in NW India), came from Central Asia (Iran/Persia), across the passes, through the rugged NW Indian mountains, 3500 years ago. They were considered superior amongst races. During the days Hitler commandeered the supreme powers, he ordered young German girls to mate with Aryan men and produce a superior race, after he got rid of the Jews. A teenage beauty told me about this in a London dance hall. She was on a short holiday from Germany.
The world was attracted to India-The Golden Sparrow- for a) its wealth b) the brilliant brains of the educated Sanskrit Gurus, their high levels of achievement in the Art of Yoga, Transcendental Meditation, and c) its condiments. The literacy excellence of the Sanskrit language, the preaching of the Vedas, Upanishads, Bhagvad Gita and above all the Hito-Updeshas, were really impressive. Hito-Updeshas means advice, suited to help your well-being.
These contain hundreds of couplets, giving good advice for reader’s future and development. Some ruler like Chandra Gupta Maurya, was the showcase of India’s greatness. He brought down Alexander the Great, and also renounced his greatest empire in the world. He walked away in penance, looking up to the Jain guru Mahabir.
National Library of India has authentic literature on Indian history, showing that the fabric of Indian and Persian Empire was expanding in 4th century BC. It stretched from Greece to India. The famous Alexander the Great was proud and an egoist man. He could not bear the humiliation of India being the Intelligence Capital
of the world. He wanted to control, crush anyone of superior intelligence, and rule this great country, just like Central Asian, Russians, Mongols, Greeks, and Moguls before him did. He used his superior techniques of warfare, especially designed armors, and the art of bringing the prowess of elephants into mad hysteria as an unstoppable force to crush everything that came in their way! Passing through the formidable Khyber Pass, piercing through rugged mountain ranges of the Afghanistan, breezing through Punjab (like Hitler later took Poland over, in 2 hours), crossing the Beas River and on to the 64 gates in the huge Walls of Delhi built by the Moguls. They moved in waves reaching a crescendo, creating the biggest scare in the whole of India, especially amongst the defense forces! They destroyed over 570 buildings and four cities in 2000 BC but lost a high percentage of their army. They were worn out and exhausted. All the same, they were the superior forces that created a fear complex amongst the whole of India.
However, during the months taken by Alexander’s forces, to reach from Khyber Pass to Bangalore. There was a trap being set up by a gentleman, an excellent war planner, the grandfather of Ashoka the Great, who was respected as a benevolent ruler marrying an ordinary girl and creating real unity amongst all sectors of society. It was Chandra Gupta Maurya He helped India to become a great Country. His grandson Ashoka was even greater. He maintained and spread the excellent heredity of Chandra Gupta.
Ashoka the Great
(Thanks to Wikipedia-Free encyclopedia for certain

One of the pillars of strength of India –THE GOLDEN SPARROW, Ashoka the Great’s popularity exceeded that of his grandfather, who built most of the Mauriyan dynasty. His techniques of ruling enhanced his control over the hearts and minds of his subject, enemies, and neighboring lands alike. He enhanced India’s popularity as a great nation, during the 40 years of his rule. Thus the Golden Sparrow became the Jewel of the East.
Mauryan dynasty lasted just 50 years, after his death. The last Mauryan ruler was brutally murdered by his commander-in-chief, while he was taking the Guard of Honor of his forces, in 185BC.
The Northwest Territories of the Mauryan Empire (modern-day Iran, Afghanistan, and Greece,) became the Indo-Greek kingdom after Pusyamitra Sunga ended in 78BC. In 1992, Ashoka was ranked #53 on Michael H. Hart’s list of the most influential rulers in history.
The reign of Ashoka Maurya could have easily disappeared into history, had he not left behind a record of his accomplishments, in the form of magnificently sculpted pillars and boulders, with a variety of inscriptions and teachings, etched into the stone.
The smartest thing Ashoka, did was not to use the difficult Sanskrit language, for his engravings.
Taking a cue from his respected guru Buddah, he used the current practical language Prakrit.
Ashoka had many wives and children. Mahindra and Sanghamitra were twins born by his fourth wife Devi, in the city of Ujjain. They went into Sri Lanka and converted the King, the Queen, and their people to Buddhism. He came under the spell of his youngest and wicked wife, who got his son Kunala, blinded.
One of the more enduring legacies of Ashoka, was the promotion of relationship between Buddhism and the state. He replaced the notion of divine kingship (E.g. in Angkor kingdom,) by the close association between the religious hierarchy and monarchy. He used to call a conclave to settle a number of contentious disputes between the administration and the Buddhist Sangas during his reign. This resulted in harmony in several southern estates of his kingdom. A living example of that in modern times is the state-supported Buddhism in Thailand- a symbol of a new imperial unity and a cementing force uniting diverse elements.
Ashoka’s Edict below, indicates Buddhist influence amongst Hellenistic kings: Conquest by Dhamma has been won here on the borders. Even six hundred yojanas away, where the Greek king Antiochos rules, beyond there where the four kings named Ptolemy, Antigonos, Magas and Alexander rule, likewise in the south among the Cholas, the Pandyas, and as far as Tamraparni.
The Ashoka Chakra, the wheel of Righteousness,
Is at the center of the National Flag of India today, where it is rendered in a Navy-Blue color over a white background?
The Lion Capital of Ashoka- atop an Ashoka Pillar at Sarnath, erected in 250BC, has been adopted as the National Emblem of India. It shows the horse on the left and the Bull on the right of the Ashoka Chakra, in the circular base on which the four Indian lions are standing back to back.
The quality of the rulers had deteriorated, 3000 years after Ashoka-the-Great s’ rule. By 1600 AD. The Golden Sparrow had lost its wings and was so weakened and divided that a handful of people under Clive; a third-rate British soldier could take over the whole nation, using the fundamental technique of Divide and Rule.
The Muslim Emperors of India caused the divisions of India on religious lines. The split up of Pakistan by the British in 1947, could not last out and soon created a new country Bangla Desh (meaning Bengali speaking country) on the east of India where the British had originally established the East India Company.
However, going back to 2000 BC Chandra Gupta Maurya, the above-mentioned grandfather of Ashoka, ambushed the invaders by building an un-pierceable ring around the forces of Alexander the Great, who were resting around Bangalore.
This resulted in fierce battle ending in the bottleneck of the Hastnapur cul-de-sac.
Chandra Gupta Maurya’s superior war techniques, creating thundering sounds by drumbeats, which made elephants, mad and turn back on their owner’s army, gave the crushing blow to Alexander.
