Word Knitters

Word Knitters was established in 2017. These seven writers, from left to right, (First row: Sandra Carman, Anita F. Moore, Carolyn French; Second row: Nona Dean, Shirley A. Huffines, Lois Abbott Tanner, Brenda Miller) came together in search of a safe haven in which to share and improve their writings. Our selections showcase our diversity in style and the courage to display work in progress. “Legacy. . . is what we leave in others” is the group’s first project to be marketed internationally.

    Katy’s Legacy

    I met Katy a few weeks after she moved to Lexington from northern Kentucky. Her husband, who was a Baptist minister, had died of a heart attack, leaving her with two sons. One was a marine, but the other was a teenager. She made the most of her life. She went back to teaching and she came to the church, Rosemont Baptist, where my family and I attended. She played the piano for the church and she also taught a women’s class that I joined. This was how I came to know her.

    Katy had a beautiful personality and loved everyone. I loved to hear her laugh. She lived in a house on Mockingbird Lane, and she opened her home to her Sunday School Class for our monthly get-togethers. She loved to entertain, and she was a good cook. She could grow the most beautiful roses.

    Katy, my sister Ruth, and I would visit shut-ins on Tuesdays, and we had the best time. She was a fun person to be around. We were the best of friends from 1972 to 1988.

    My husband retired from IBM and we moved to McQuady. We built a house on his mother’s farm and helped take care of her until she died in 1999.

    Katy and my sister, Ruth, really hated for me to move, but Ruth did bring Katy and two other lady friends down to see me in June of 1989. Katy got out, walked around, and looked at my flowers. She seemed to really enjoy her visit, but I never got to see her again.

    She died in January of 1991 - but I knew she loved me. She sent me many cards and would keep me up to date on the happenings at Rosemont. I wrote a poem about her after she died. She was a lovely lady. I miss her.

    To Katy,

    A Beautiful Lady

    You’re my teacher, my confidant, wonderful friend.

    I hope the joys we’ve shared never come to an end.

    Your laughter is so precious - it brings joy to my soul.

    You are such a remarkable lady, full of self-control.

    You are youthful and vibrant - you will always be young.

    Your life tells a story - that’s yet to be sung.

    Your life here on earth has been happy and sad.

    But you remember the good and forget the bad.

    I’ll treasure our friendship down through the years.

    I’ll remember our good times and forget the tears.

    When our life here is over and in heaven we meet -

    What fun we will have; Oh, won’t it be sweet!

    My Legacy

    Lord, you sacrificed so much for me;

    You are surely my legacy.

    When others fail me, you are always there -

    Helping me with my every care.

    Thank you, Lord, this is my prayer;

    Thank you for always being there.

    What can I say? What can I do?

    I could not make it without you.

    You are my Lord, my all in all;

    Always there when I call.

    Thank you, Lord, for being there.

    Thank you, Lord, this is my prayer.

    I need you, Jesus, every day;

    You will help me, come what may.

    You have promised to be my guide;

    Always ready at my side.

    I have no friend as faithful as you;

    I know you will always see me through.

    My Epitaph

    Lord remember me

    for the things I’ve done,

    As I helped others

    to remember your Son.

    And now as death

    has overtaken me,

    May those I helped

    remember me.

    My Mother’s Hands

    My mother’s hands have worked so hard,

    From changing babies to mowing the yard.

    She washed on a washboard for many a year,

    That was before you could buy Tide or Cheer.

    She canned all her vegetables and meat from the hogs,
