ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
First, I must give all honor and glory to Almighty God. Without Him, I would not have the strength and opportunity to write this book. Thanks to my late parents Maduakolam and Mgbere Maritha Akamadu, who raised me very well to believe in disciplined action. Words cannot express my gratitude to my dad and mom; they worked so hard for me to get where I am today. My parents did not have many educational opportunities during their lives; however, they made sure I got the education they didn’t have. Thank God I made them proud. Thanks to my beautiful children, Kelly, Cherise, and Harvey. Thanks to my beautiful wife Pearl. Thanks to the NYC-HRA/DSS; they hired me when I was looking for a government job. If they hadn’t hired me, I wouldn’t have this incredible experience and knowledge about single moms. Working with single moms, I have seen their courage, bravery, struggle, love, caring, dedication, and perseverance. In addition, working with New Yorkers has opened my eyes to many aspects of their wonderful lives; this ignited my passion for social work education and research. Thanks to the U.S. Federal Student Loan program and other outlets that helped make my educational dream come true. I always pray that God will provide me with the resources to pay back my student loan debts. Finally, thanks to my coworkers who show team spirit each day as we serve vulnerable New Yorkers. I want to use my book to honor and recognize single moms for their commitment to excellence in raising their children alone.
INTRODUCTION
In June 2001, I entered the John Jay College of Criminal Justice to pursue my Masters of Pubic Administration/Criminal Justice degree and began my professional journey as a New York City fraud investigator. Having come from the banking industry as a clerk and a building fire safety director, entering a large Social Services agency was quite a big change. However, I quickly learned that I needed an advanced degree in social work to effectively address the needs of vulnerable New Yorkers. While at Hunter College School of Social Work for my second Masters’ in MSW, I tried to determine whether my faith was really compatible with the profession of social work, particularly my client population. Interestingly, I discovered that this work is like a calling for me. I’m naturally very compassionate and a very good advocate for others. Furthermore, I believe that more emphasis must be placed on the program integrity of public welfare; that is, I believe that welfare benefits should go to people who meet the criteria and who need it, and not to fraudsters. This perspective qualified me to help shape the
