Breaking the Cycle is a series of fictional poems and short stories derived from true accounts of tragedy, loss and pain combined with stories of finding inner strength and conquering adversity. Breaking the Cycle graphically addresses issues of abuse, substance abuse, heart break, death and conversely love, hope, strength, spiritual and emotional growth. Breaking the Cycle will give perspective to individuals who do not understand the plight of people growing up in impoverished communities and will give a constructive voice to those who identify but do not have an outlet to express their story. All of this in hopes of one day completely Breaking the Cycle of poverty.

Tony Wilson is a much-loved Australian children's book author and one-time Hawthorn draftee. His books include Harry Highpants, The Princess and the Packet of Frozen Peas, Stuff Happens: Jack, Emo the Emu and The Cow Tripped Over the Moon, which was an Honour Book in the 2016 Children's Book Council of Australia Awards. Tony lives in Melbourne.

Introduction

This project is a longtime coming and something that, even as a child, I promised the number one woman in my life I would produce.

From a young age I have had to take on the duties of being the man of the house—long before it was my time. Through good times and bad, my mother and I banded together as a unit for our survival. Both of us have remained dedicated and loyal to the preservation of our stability and peace within this unit. I always hold a grave sense of gratitude in my heart for the lessons given to me by my mother—lessons taught to me while she was working multiple jobs and maintaining our household by herself.

It was constantly made apparent to me that I had to grow up and mature at a rate faster than the other students I was around. When I went home after school, there was no one there because my mother was working to make sure we had enough to get by. Through this, she always made it a point to tell me the truth about life and the world surrounding me. Some of these truths may have been inappropriate for a young man’s mind, but my mother was adamant that I understand the world and my place in it. This prepared me for the many obstacles I would face growing up. Although, at a young age, I was placed with such a strong burden, I am
