    INTRODUCTION

Shawnee is her name. She is a beautiful butterfly free to spread her wings. Her story will leave you captivated and moved to tears of both joy and sorrow. Her life is much easier now than it was before. Her existence is peaceful and fulfilling. That wasn’t the case in the past. Shawnee has suffered through much pain and heartache, as so many of us have. She has learned many lessons but the most important lesson that she has had to learn is that life isn’t about holding a good hand but it’s about playing a poor one well.

At an early age, Shawnee was dealt a poor hand, but through all of the trials and tribulations she has a testimony. She has survived all the things that were meant to break her and has emerged victorious. Shawnee’s greatest hope is that, in the telling of her story she will be able to reach others who have gone through similar trials and tribulations. Teenagers, moms, and dads, no matter who you are. She hopes to reach each and every person who has suffered or still suffering through severe depression and anxiety caused by a series of detrimental events. As I sit here and record her story tears began to fall from my eyes. I am picturing the young scared little girl in my mind even though I am now staring at a beautiful woman who has triumphed over her pain and began to heal. Shawnee tells her story.

    CHAPTER ONE

    25718.png

A time to heal. When you’ve been hurt to the core of your being and you feel as though you are broken inside…what do you do? Where do you go? Who do you turn to, when you have given up all hope of ever living a normal life? Is there anyone else in this world that can understand this pain that you are feeling? Is there anyone else out there that can relate? These are the questions that I’ve asked myself time and time again. Truth is, there are a lot of people out here in this ugly world that can relate to the pain and fear that often lies within me. The struggles that I have had to face on a day to day basis, and the heart wrenching pain that I’ve had to endure. Many of you have lived through or still living through these struggles. We think that we are alone. I want you to know that you are not alone. There are so many adults and children suffering from depression. There are many teenagers who constantly think of committing suicide because they can not deal with the effects of their depression or anxiety. There are many who feel as though they have no one that they can talk to about their feelings, so they fall prey to this terrible disease of the mind.

As children, many of us grow up with plans and dreams of a better life for ourselves. We set goals to achieve and we never once consider that perhaps we won’t get a chance to meet those goals or achieve those dreams. Some of us live in poverty and see a bleak future for ourselves. Many of us have been molested, raped, bullied and badly abused as children and we lose our way; we lose our voice. We ask ourselves, Who will give us back our voice? Who will return our innocence and restore our dignity? How do we even begin to fight our way back to the surface, when we have sunken so low from the overwhelming effects of depression that has been caused by enduring so many painful situations? How do we mend our broken hearts? How do we begin to heal? That’s what this story is all about…A time to heal.

Isaiah 53:5 KJV says…but he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.

    A TIME TO HEAL

How do we heal, from all the pain we feel?

How do we mend our broken hearts

when our whole world has fallen apart?

Where do we go? How do we start?

How do we pick up the broken pieces of our life

    and search for peace

    without the interference of strife?

How do we heal…from all the pain we feel?

How do we make it through… day by day

    suffering from the heartbreak

that we can no longer shake?

Amongst this pain our destiny lies,

    We’re drowning in sorrow

    from so many unspoken goodbyes.

How do we heal… from the pain we feel?

    How do we cope,

    when we’ve given up hope?

For our future is not written in stone.

Not until the day that God calls us home.

Even though many of our loved ones

have gone on, to live in the sky.

    They’ve gained their wings,

and earned the right to fly high.

How do we heal, from the pain we feel?

How do we close off the madness inside

and stop the pandemonium within our minds?

This pain we feel is real.

When will it be… a time to heal?

Psalms 119:82 NIV says…My eyes fail, looking for your promise: I say, when will you comfort me?

As a young girl, I remember dreaming about Prince Charming. I was young and innocent with big dreams and stars in my eyes. My imagination was wild and my head was always in the clouds. Family was always important to me. I would fantasize about the perfect husband and the perfect life that I would live someday. I was going to have the most beautiful, well- mannered kids in the whole world I vowed. My husband would love them and protect all of us from any harm or danger. He would be my knight in shining armor. He would be a man of integrity and highly respected, tall dark and handsome. I dreamed of a man with class and intelligence, who was humble and spiritual. He would love me unconditionally and only have eyes for me. I would be his true match in every way and we would live happily ever after just like in the fairytales. I always believed that my Prince would come. I always believed in fate and destiny and no one could shake my belief in these things. None of us really knows what the future holds for us. I was filled with so much passion, so many hopes and dreams at a young age and no one could tell me that my dreams would not come true. But those dreams would be shattered.

"You can make many plans but the Lord’s purpose will prevail."

Proverbs 19:21 NIV says…Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails.

    SHATTERED DREAM

There’s nothing worse than having your most intimate dream shattered.

Leaving you feeling tossed upon the rocks, broken and battered.

Having no hope that your dream will come true.

You’re drowning in a sea that is no longer blue.

All of your days become grey

and you fight to keep the depression away.

Hoping all along your dream won’t disappear

when deep down inside, you’re quivering with fear.

Anxiety finds you, it drags you down.

It takes a hold of your mind.

Your spirit is weak, you’re surrendering in defeat

Because your dream has been shattered

and nothing else seems to matter.

You’ve lost your reason to hope and pray

That your dream may come true someday.

Proverbs 13:12 NIV says…Hope deferred makes the heart sick: a longing fulfilled is a tree of life.

I grew up in a small town in South Carolina with my grandmother. We were poorer than poor. My dad wanted to provide a better life for his family and so he decided to leave South
