Family
Tasha, if you don’t hurry up and come out that room …
Shayla screamed. We’re down here waiting on you!
As I opened my eyes, I should be happy to see another birthday—my nineteenth birthday, that is. Tasha,
Shayla yelled again, Mommy said don’t make her come up there.
As my sister kept yelling, I set myself on the edge of the bed; and a tear rolled down my face—not because it’s my birthday, but because this is not how I imagined my life to be. Don’t get me wrong. I love my daughter; she means the world to me. I’m just saying that I wish I had made better choices. Lord, it has to be something better out her for me,
I sighed.
I barely see my mother because she’s always drunk and partying (whatever that includes, it’s not us). The only people that I have in my life are my daughter, Ti’Janae, and my sister, Shayla, and her two boys, Keondrick and Tydrick. Tasha!
Shayla yelled yet again. Lord, if she calls my name one more time, I’mma … Let me get up and go see what this girl wants.
I opened the door and walked down the hallway. There was complete silence, so I thought, Why isn’t Shayla yelling now? Soon as I turned the corner, everyone yelled Surprise! Happy Birthday!
while throwing confetti. Balloons went everywhere and music played. Everybody looked happy, except my mother, Ruby. Turning up her favorite bottle of Hennessy, she looked at me like I sickened her.
Y’all need to hurry up with this,
Ruby said, rolling her eyes and shoving two candles in my hand, as Shayla brought me the cake. I have things to do.
My sister grabbed my hand and led me to the table to blow out the candles. In certain situations, my sister always knew what to do.
As I placed the cake on the table, Ti’Janae said I want to light them for you, Mommy.
Shayla helped my daughter on the chair to light the candles for me. Hurry, Mommy! The cake looks good,
Ti’Janae ordered. My daughter is so smart and so beautiful, yet so bossy, as you can see. I just looked at her, said okay, made a wish, and blew out the candles. Everyone clapped in excitement and started eating and dancing. I went ahead and cut Ti’Janae a piece ’cause that’s all she wanted anyway. I wasn’t in the mood to celebrate, so I went over and hugged Shayla and thanked her with a smile and walked away.
As I began to approach my mother, I guess she sensed me headed toward her because she turned around, looked at me again, rolled her eyes, took another sip of her drink, and walked outside. Did I disappoint her that much that she doesn’t want to have anything to do with me? My friends and family bore witness to Ruby’s actions, and the party that was full of excitement was now uncomfortable.
While looking at everyone’s faces in disbelief, my eyes stopped on one family member that was there: Uncle Tony. He has always been low-down and trifling; he was someone who could not be trusted. Who in the hell invited him anyway! If only Ruby and Shayla knew what he did to me, he wouldn’t be here, let alone live. Just the sight of him made my stomach turn.
I never shared with anyone what he did to me when I was a nine-year-old little girl. When my father died, my mother blamed herself for him being gone for so long. My dad was in the army, so he traveled a lot when we were growing up—state to state, country to country. Shayla’s dad was also in the army, but her dad was shot down by a fellow soldier who went crazy and started shooting on base.
When my dad went off to war, we didn’t see him for eight months; but we were able to get a lot of letters and pictures of him in his uniform, standing next to his plane, Majestic Majesty. But one afternoon, while we were watchingTV, there was a knock on the door. As Ruby went to go open the door, she fell to her knees. Shayla and I walked over, and there stood Lt. Stevens and two other soldiers with a folded United States flag and my dad’s medals. After the burial of my father, Ruby started working nights at the county hospital to make ends meet (plus, it was better pay). So she would have Uncle Tony come over and keep us until she came home at 6:00 a.m.
One night, as Shayla and I were getting ready for bed, there was a knock on the door. When I opened it, I looked toward the heavens and saw a huge, black cloud covering the sky that was once beautiful and blue with fluffy white clouds. A storm was coming. Ruby was walking out the door; then, she kissed us and said I’ll see you, girls, in the morning.
As I watched my mother walk to her car, a loud boom shock the house. I shut the door and ran to my room so fast and hid under the covers. The rain was hitting my bedroom window so hard. I put the covers over my face; then, another loud boom! sounded out. I squeezed my baby doll so tight; then my bedroom door opened, and Uncle Tony came in and said Tasha, you can come in the living room with me if you want. I know you’re scared of the rain.
I jumped out of the bed and grabbed Uncle Tony’s hand. When we got to the living room, he picked me up and put me on his lap. He asked, You love your uncle?
I replied, Yeah, I love you, Uncle Tony.
Once I said that, he started touching me in places and grown man should not touch a little girl. I felt ashamed, nasty, scared, and embarrassed.
After that, he said "Now go clean yourself up before Ruby comes home.
I replied Yes, sir
in fear and ran to the bathroom.
Tasha, this is our little secret, okay?
he looked at me while he zipped up his pants.
Okay,
I replied and went to my room and cried myself to sleep.
This happened three times a week for three years. He sneaked into my room and took advantage of me. There were days when I would try to sleep with Shayla, but he would make me go to my room; then, I would go to my room and hide and sometimes sleep in the closet. I would pray Please, Lord, don’t let him fin me tonight.
Sometimes I felt like God didn’t hear me, but on one occasion, he did. I heard the door to my room open and my uncle’s footsteps come closer to the closet. I whispered, Lord, please.
At this, I spotted my uncle’s shadow turn around; and the sound of his footsteps became faint. I came out of the closet and looked out my window toward the sky. I blew my breath on the window and wrote the word love in capital letters. That night I felt like God loved me for the first time.
On Ruby’s days off, we would have movie night. On this particular night, we were watching The Lion King. It was my favorite movie because it reminded me so much of my dad. Ruby was drunk on this night too (sometimes she would get so drunk that she would fall and
