As we walked out of the spiritualist church, Mum turned to me, a happy smile on her face.

‘I’m not afraid of dying,’ she said as we set off for home. ‘When it’s my time to go I’ll come back to see you if I can.’ ‘It’ll be a while before that happens, Mum!’ I laughed.

My 72-year-old mum, Eunice Bass, was so strong, full of life. I just couldn’t imagine a world without her in it.

But one evening in May 2010, I was working in the pub that I managed, when my neighbour Jemma rang.
