I am the matriarch of a large family consisting of a son, two daughters, four grandsons, eight great-great grandchildren. I grew up in the small town of Bryan, Ohio. After my marriage to a farmer, I became involved in all aspect of agriculture. Including, at one point, being surrogate mother to baby ostriches. During this period of time, I also worked as a partner in my parent's wholesale heating and air-conditioning business. After my children finished college. I earned a bachelors degree in history and museum studies with a minor in fine art. The led to several second careers. The art degree opened up opportunities to create torn paper mosaics and painted ostrich eggs that were shown at area art shows and also to complete a couple of barn murals. The history degree landed me a job as curator at the Williams County Historical Society Museum. In retirement, I am delighted to spin some interesting tales for the school children who visited the museum for their yearly tour. While these books are fiction, they are set at actual sites belonging to the Historical Society. My goal is to entertain but also teach a little history along the way.

    Prologue

Somebody grabbed my arm. C’mon, we gotta run, he said.

What? Why? I shouted. Where are we going?

We don’t want to get caught. Hurry up! he yelled.

My eyes got a little more used to the dimness and I could see the boy, who was just a little bit shorter than I am, running away from me. He had dark, very curly hair and the whites of his eyes stood out against his chocolate brown skin. He was dressed in a light blue short sleeved shirt with his brown pants cut off at his ankles. He wasn’t wearing any shoes!

Wait a minute, I called back. Where are we going?

See that wagon over there under those trees? he shouted over his shoulder. That man sittin’ there is going to take us to the Jordan River and freedom. I don’t wanna to go back to my Master!

Then he took off running again, so I ran after him. But I had on this stupid long dress and couldn’t go very fast. Oops! My foot caught in the hem and I went sprawling to the ground. Oww!

    Then everything went black!

Well, how do I look? Like a proper Quaker lady? Mom laughed.

Okay, I guess, I said. "I don’t know what a Quaker lady is supposed to look like."

My older sister, Kristen, walked into the family room and looked at Mom. I think you did a really good job sewing that dress, Mom, she said.

I hope so, Mom replied. "I got some really good information with pictures from the library and I do
