About this ebook
Carol Castor
I am the matriarch of a large family consisting of a son, two daughters, four grandsons, eight great-great grandchildren. I grew up in the small town of Bryan, Ohio. After my marriage to a farmer, I became involved in all aspect of agriculture. Including, at one point, being surrogate mother to baby ostriches. During this period of time, I also worked as a partner in my parent's wholesale heating and air-conditioning business. After my children finished college. I earned a bachelors degree in history and museum studies with a minor in fine art. The led to several second careers. The art degree opened up opportunities to create torn paper mosaics and painted ostrich eggs that were shown at area art shows and also to complete a couple of barn murals. The history degree landed me a job as curator at the Williams County Historical Society Museum. In retirement, I am delighted to spin some interesting tales for the school children who visited the museum for their yearly tour. While these books are fiction, they are set at actual sites belonging to the Historical Society. My goal is to entertain but also teach a little history along the way.

My teacher, mentor, friend
Prologue
I put the bucket under the spout and had to stretch way up on my tippy toes to grasp the pump handle. I pulled down. This is going to take a while, I thought. Slowly pull down. Let it go back up. Slowly pull down again. Finally, a trickle of water started to fill the pail. At first I didn’t notice, but suddenly a big cloud of fog surrounded me. What the heck?
I could still see the bucket dimly so I kept pumping. Finally the fog drifted away and my bucket was just about full.
Then I heard somebody sobbing.
I turned around and looked toward the trees at the back of the school yard and saw a little girl
sitting on the ground, her hands cupped over her face, crying loudly. I ran over to see if I could help her. When I stooped down, I saw muddy water running down her arms and onto her crisp, white apron.
My gosh! What happened to you?
She continued to wail but finally took a deep breath and started to speak.
Stupid ole Herman Hupplewaite!
she sniffed.
What did he do?
I was on my way to the Privy. He’s always sneaking around. I was just about there when he jumped out from behind and pushed me down in that mud puddle. See it over there?
she pointed. Then he ran back to school. Laughing his head off.
That’s terrible!
I exclaimed.
Now I can’t go back into school. Just look at me. I’m a mess.
Tears started running down her cheeks and she began wailing again.
Of course you can,
I said in a firm voice. My dad’s the teacher today and he’ll be able to help, I know. By the way, what’s your name?
Lillian. Lillian McBride. But my friends call me Lilly.
Well, I’d like to be your friend too, Lilly. C’mon.
I took hold of her hands and pulled her to her feet. Then I put one hand in hers and picked up the pail of water with the other and we headed back toward the school.
When we got inside, I put the pail down just inside the door. Dad had his back to the room, writing
