The Other World
By Maria Whittaker
Samantha Jones thought she was a normal girl and that this was going to be any normal year of school, but she couldn’t be any more wrong. It wasn’t any normal year of school. It was senior year. And what came with it was not anticipated by anyone. But what appeared with it was completely uncanny. Until she had made a friend with the same capabilities, everything was great. However, after she had everything, it all fell apart when she fell in love with her human soul mate. But according to the rules of her world, she can’t be in love or connect with with humans. Her love can very well save or destroy the world as we know it.
Prologue
My name is Samantha, and I am not a normal person like a lot of people think. There is something that is not completely normal about me. See, there is something that happens to me on a regular basis. I can see the future. The things that I see come to me in my dreams, but after, I can’t remember them in the morning when I try to explain it to my parents. After, when I do something for example, it all of a sudden comes back to me in a rush, like I am experiencing déjà vu. And I remember what I saw that night. But that is not the only thing though. I can see things that other people can’t. I can see the extra details that are in items that others can’t. But that is not all—I can make out images in images in images. People have tried to figure what is going on with me, but no one has a clue as to where to look for answers that can answer their questions. They think that is the most awful thing about me, but I can see and hear people that have passed, moved, or haven’t seen in a long time. But in order for me to be able to do all of this, I have to concentrate. But enough about me and my unnatural abilities. This is a story about me and my life, and there’s a lot to tell.
Chapter 1
So as you read/heard, this is no ordinary story/tale about some person, and you are probably wanting to know what has happened and/or what’s happening, but like any, you always start at the same place. The beginning.
It was just like any other day. Sunny blue sky, no clouds, and it was twenty degrees out, but the weather wasn’t going to stay the same for long. It was the beginning of September and of school. But this year was special. It was senior year for me. The beginning of the last year of high school. But as it turned out, it wasn’t going to be normal. But I didn’t know this at the time. The day started like any other first day of school. Everyone excited and, of course, in a rush. I woke up early, like always, but mainly because I was happy, over the moon some people said, because it was senior year. I finally made it, I kept thinking to myself. Jumping out of bed, I started my regular routine. When I was finished, I walked out of my room to be overwhelmed by the most wonderful smell ever. Fresh homemade cinnamon buns from the oven. What’s going on? I wondered with suspicion.
Walking down the stairs, I heard my mother whistling, which meant she was happy. I walked into the kitchen with a smile on my face when my mother said, Morning, honey, did you get a good night’s rest?
Yes, I did, thank you,
I lied. I was up all night, reading my favorite book series, Dark World by Danielle Q. Lee, and I was thinking about what this year can hold for me. Walking past the table, I went over to the crib in the corner. It held my little sister, Bay Lilith Rose Jones. I got to personally name her. I can remember her birth like it was yesterday, but it was just a month ago, so that explains why. Picking her up, I gave her a hug, plopped a kiss on her little forehead, and walked us over to the table. On the way to the table, I uttered to her, Hello, Bay, how did you sleep?
And like always, I got the same answering yawn. I just loved her so much. Little did I know my time with her would be so short.
I sat in my usual spot at the table, holding the baby, waiting for my mother to bring over the food so I can hand Bay over to her.
With thumping footsteps and creaking of wooden stairs, I knew Father was up for the usual. Walking into the kitchen, whistling like my mother, he was happy. He walked over to me and my sister, plopping a kiss on our foreheads, then went over to the island where my mother stood icing the cinnamon rolls. He gave her a kiss then a giant bear hug, classic Dad. He greeted us with the usual Morning, girls. Morning, Amanda.
Amanda Steven Lee Jones was my mother’s name. She is the kindest person you will ever meet. She always wears the same thing. Black jeans, sneakers, blue short-sleeved shirt, and gray sweater, with beautifully long black wavy hair. People say I look just like her, but a little taller because she is five feet four inches and I am two inches taller. Morning, Dean.
Dean Matthew Winston Jones is my father’s name. Except for the fact that he is male and wears different kinds of clothing, he and my mom are the same person, soul mates, in love with everything they need in the world.
Morning, Dad,
I replied for both me and Bay because she was just a newborn baby. Even though I loved the situation, I just had to ask, What is going on? I love everything that is happening, but it doesn’t seem normal.
What are you talking about?
my mother asked back.
Everything! From the baked goods to how you are acting!
We are just happy for you and very proud of our little girl.
Thank you, I have great role models for parents.
Then I got up with the baby, walked over to my parents, and hugged them both.
My father took the baby, and my mom handed me the plate of cinnamon buns and went back to the table. When we were seated and started to inhale the most amazing baked goods in the world, my father asked me in between bites and swallows Are you excited for your first day of senior year?
Then added silently under his breath, which I think was only meant for him, Wow, senior year, I remember when she started kindergarten.
I am over the moon to be back at school and to see my friends again.
And only I would be merry to be back at school because I love to learn. But other people will be happy, merry, and cheerful for other reasons.
We sat and ate in silence, and then I asked the question, So am I walking, talking the bus, or are you driving me like you do every year on the first day?
They had thought about this for a second, gave the secret nod, smiled, then looked back at me with huge grins lighting up their faces.
How about you drive yourself?
But I can’t. I don’t have a car.
Or do you?
my father pronounced.
Are you saying what I think you are saying?
Yes!
my mother exclaimed with more enthusiasm in her voice, then I heard in most of my long seventeen years of life on this rock we call planet Earth.
I leaped out of my chair and sprinted to and out of the door. Outside, waiting for me in the driveway of our modern home was a 2017 Chevy Malibu that was brand-new and in my favorite color in the world, silver.
Is this really mine!
I squealed
