The Call to Arms: The Battle for the Hearts, Minds, and Souls of Men
()
About this ebook
The moment we come to faith in Jesus Christ, we are enrolled into battle against the unholy trinity; the world, the flesh, and the devil. And all too many men are AWOL (absent without leave) in their walk with the Lord. Spiritually, they are missing in action.
A Call to Arms is about the challenges all Christian men face in this battle and the ways our enemy goes about to subvert our growth and obedience to the call of God in our lives. It is addressed to Christian men who have struggled in their walk with the Lord, just as the author, Stephen, has.
The battle with our old nature is honestly addressed, as are the brokenness of divorce, loneliness, and other areas of woundedness within us. A look at the beauty of brokenness is addressed, noting that there are redemptive qualities suffering can bring about in our lives.
Renewal for the hearts, minds, and souls of men can come only by the transforming power of the Word of God.
Included after each chapter is a 5-day study guide to help us to examine our own heart and deepen our understanding of both the material covered and about ourselves.
Stephen Allen Newby
Nothing moves the heart of Stephen more than a changed life. He has worked in aerospace, space and defense systems, semi-conductor, and in the oil industry. He loves his two precious daughters, Sarah and Micah, and he loves to teach the Word of God. Steve is an avid outdoorsman; surfing, fishing, snorkeling, and collecting rocks. These loves have been greatly curtailed with the amputation of his left leg above the knee, but he celebrates the memories of those wonderful times. He has known much pain and hardship, and who amongst us hasn’t. He writes what he has experienced. He writes from the heart.

About the Book
The Call to Arm’s premise is this: The moment we give our hearts and lives to Jesus Christ we are enrolled into spiritual battle. The unholy trinity (the world, the flesh, and the devil) wars against us daily. This book honestly confronts the challenges and struggles all Christian men know and face.
This book notes that many men have gone AWOL in their day to day walk with Jesus Christ. It takes an honest look at some of the things that call out to us; the very assaults the enemy uses to thwart our love and obedience to the call of God in our lives.
Our need for renewal via the Word of God is stressed; that we might overwrite the corrupt database within us; within our hearts.
The Call to Arms examines what the Word of God says about both the heart and mind of a man. 1 Corinthians 16:13 encourages us with these words: Be on the alert, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong.
Sections speak on the pain and brokenness of divorce, of loneliness, and of the father wound; areas of woundedness within us and the beauty of brokenness these trials bring into our lives.
There’s a straightforward look at the power of our words and what it means to be a true man in our thoughts, words, and deeds.
God is our Supreme Commander in this battle we are called into. Qualities and attributes of God are scripturally addressed, as well as our role as watchmen under His command. The Call to Arms speaks of our need to re-enlist into His service.
Additionally, there is a 5-day study guide at the end of each chapter to deepen our understanding of both the material we read and about ourselves.

In spite of working a full time job, and supporting her husband in ministry, Kari Heitman was an invaluable and godly asset to me. Her excellent editorial and copy critiques, the challenging questions and comments she directed to me, and her syntax and grammar savvy were all so welcome and much needed. Her love for the Lord and for His Word was evident in all her support to me.

I have many people to thank for their encouragement and prayers as I wrote. Number one amongst them is my beloved mother, Gail Rae Wilkinson. Her excitement about each chapter, her editorial inputs and comments, and her belief that such a book needed to be written, was such an encouragement to me, as is she. She loves the Lord, and His Word, more than anyone I have ever known or met.
Preface
There’s a war going on. It’s a spiritual battle and all too many Christian men have gone silent in the battle. Our heart is what is truly at issue here.
The berthing force behind this book is the phrase to guard the hearts and minds of men.
These words came to me many years ago in a unique and terrifying way. Allow me.
They came during a period in my life that I was struggling to provide for my wife and our firstborn daughter, Sarah. I had come to faith in Jesus Christ just a couple years earlier. I had a growing fire within me for Jesus Christ and for the Word of God. I sensed a call from God into ministry and others in my church recognized the same, yet I was locked into a job where I was physically, mentally, emotionally, financially, and spiritually drained.
For a number of years before going to college, I worked in an open air Quonset hut in an electrical motor shop in south Texas, just north of Galveston in support of the refiner’s in the area. The work and work environment were filthy. There was no air conditioning in the summer and no heater in the winter. By noon, I was covered in electrical motor grease, the chemicals Varsol and Xylene, epoxy, ash from the burn out ovens, and sweat. At the time, I did not see God in that place, but I knew he was present within me.
I began to press God for an understanding of His will for my life and why I had so many day to day struggles, and the ongoing misery I was experiencing.
During that time period, there were nights while in bed that I would silently preach. The words just came to me, and I would continue to preach to who-knows-who until I had to get out of bed to change out of the T-shirt I had perspired through.
But there was one night where I did not preach. As my wife slept soundly beside me, I wrestled deeply with what the will of God was for me and about His call on my life. You know… why all the struggles? Why His silence?
That night while in bed and with eyes wide open, the bedroom suddenly illumined. A bright white and vivid static electricity audibly crackled and ran along the bedroom walls and corners. It lit the bedroom as it ran along and across the bed spread. The visible electricity even traced the outline of the bed cover I had pulled up to my nose in my attempt to hide myself, but from what? I was terrified!
As this continued, I wondered what in the world was happening. Then I became aware of words being audibly spoken, or I heard them as if audibly - I believe the former. I heard words being spoken even as I thought and spoke words to myself. It was as if there were two conversations happening in that room, both happening at the same time.
As I silenced myself, I heard two phrases spoken, each one more than once. The two phrases were 1) be patient for now
and 2) to guard the hearts and minds of men.
As soon as whatever it was had happened, the room suddenly dimmed and I fell sound sleep.
The next day I wrote of it in my journal, lamenting that if I had only kept my mouth shut and thoughts silent, I might have heard everything spoken to me. (Were they spoken to me?
) I wanted context for what I heard and experienced the night before. I felt the fool for questioning what I saw and heard.
I had a sense about be patient for now.
I think the Lord asks that of me just about every day. But now I ask, Lord, is this book I’m writing what those words were about that night - to guard the hearts and minds of men?
I believe I am to share the challenges and struggles I have known in my life as a man, both since giving my heart and life to Jesus Christ and in the dark years of my life before coming to faith in Him. It was during those darks years that I began to fill my heart and mind with much of the content that I battle against to this day - that old nature within me. I know many of these same things are what Christian men and women struggle with today.
When I have been asked to speak or when I open a class I am teaching, typically co-ed classes, I’ll state to those in attendance You know, God made me a man, I will speak as a man.
I am careful about what I share, but my life and my heart is an open book. I trust the leading of the Holy Spirit in what I have written and shared, and have asked that of Him in the writing of this book.
I have been blessed immensely in writing this. It has been, by far, the best prolonged in-depth Bible study I have ever experienced. I believe the Lord wanted that for me.
I have been led to include many Scriptures in this book - divinely inspired words of direction, correction, encouragement, and truth.
My prayer is that the reading of this book will be for our collective good and for the Glory of God. Ultimately, the only thing that truly matters is the Glory of God.

THE BATTLEGROUND
For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.
(Ephesians 6:12)
There is no battle when there is no opposing side.
We Are at War!
Men, there’s a battle going on and this war was declared since the days of creation in the Garden of Eden and it rages today. Unlike the wars that world history records, this war is spiritual in nature. It surrounds us and confronts us from every side, wanting to engulf us.
There is not a single arena in the world that isn’t involved in the struggle we face as Christian men. It’s the battle for the hearts, minds, and souls of men who love and have embraced Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord, and it’s
