My name is Dennis Riley. I’m an eighteen year old high school senior. I live in a small Ohio city with my parents and my older brother Rob, who’s away at college.

My father, William, is a successful attorney in a law firm. My brother Rob is a junior at Georgetown. He’s studying law too. He’s doing well, near the top of his class. He is, by far, my father’s favorite. My dad doesn’t hate me, at least I don’t think so. He’s not cruel to me or anything like that. Oh, he does sometimes say things that are kind of mean but I’ve learned how to ignore it. Most of the time he just doesn’t pay attention to me. I’m not an attention hog or anything like that but it would be nice to acknowledged sometimes.

I suppose it’s just me. I’m not big, athletic and handsome like Rob and I have no interest in being a lawyer. I’ve always been small and I was never much good at sports. I enjoy drawing and painting. I love animals. I have a dog and a cat, Rex and Cinnamon. Rex is a shepherd mix and Cinnamon is brown with a slight reddish tint. That’s how she got her name. I rescued them both from the pound. I guess my animals are my only real friends. I always felt like they were unwanted, like me. There is one person who’s always been there for me. That’s my mom, Kathryn. While Rob has always been dad’s favorite, I’ve always been closer to mom. She loves Rob too but we seem to have a connection. She’s the only person that I can really talk to. We have mostly the same tastes, movies and tv, even clothes. She often takes me shopping with her because she values my opinion. If she tries on something and I tell her it looks good or bad, she knows I’m being completely honest. Some guys would be uncomfortable going with their mom (or any woman) shopping for women’s clothing. It doesn’t bother me. I have to admit, there were a couple of times when the sales ladies thought I was a girl. Even though I was dressed in boy’s jeans and t-shirt and had short hair. It’s a problem I’ve had most of my life. I’ve always been rather feminine looking. I’ve never worn girl’s clothes but I don’t mind looking at the pretty clothes when we go shopping.

Mom has told me Sometimes I wish you’d been born a girl. There are so many cute outfits for teenage girls that I could buy for you. If you were my daughter, of course. To which I replied, I guess you’re just stuck with me the way I am. She laughed, I suppose so. But she gave me a strange look.

As I’ve already said, I was always the smallest boy in my class, smaller than several of the girls too. At the ages of 13 or 14, most of the boys in my class began to fill out. Get bigger in their upper bodies, bigger hands and feet, their voices began to change, and they got generally more masculine looking. Some of them even got a little hair on their faces.
