Jack Griner

The author, Jack Griner, grew up in a little town in Iowa. He went to war for four years, fighting all over the Pacific. He received two commendations and a Purple Heart for his efforts. On his return, he went to a church beach party, where he saw the cutest little thing he had ever seen . . . in an old-fashioned bathing suit. Sometime later, after much persuading, he married her. She was a Sunday school teacher and was skillful in taming him down. They were extremely happy for fifty-nine years; then cancer took her. That was another turning point in his life. She had talked him into writing a children’s poetry book. They hadn’t been fortunate enough to have any children. In any event, he had to keep his mind active to compensate for his great loss, so he continued writing. There are fifteen books in print. The author has been accepted and recognized in the International Library of Poets and the International Society of Poets, received Poetry.com trophies for outstanding work, and has donated books to several city libraries. One enjoyment of his has been reading to children at the Children’s Museum, YMCA, churches, Salvation Army Christmas parties, and even at the kids group at Starbucks. He got a free cup of coffee for that.

    First Thing In The Morn

Flowers in the garden come awake in early morn

Peddles of those blooms seem to yawn then look around

Their beauty is apparent look the sun sparkles the due

Different flowers smile at each other as they welcome

    another day that is new

Now a slight breeze makes the steams sway to and fro

All the flowers thumbs their noses at the weeds

But saying Oh well let them grow!

    Sweetness

People seem to overlook what is always welcomed its sweetness

Now you find others hesitate to roll over the person displaying it

You can’t say it’s a cure for someone hard boiled but there may be

A slight softening in the long run

Showing sweetness is almost like carrying a load

But the weight of it will always prevail

Kindness and a smile make for a happier life

When you try it you will find it works in wonders
