DEDICATION
This book is dedicated to my husband, Timothy Buck. Without your financial support, these beautiful stories would have gone untold. For this and so much more, I am eternally grateful. I inherited the entrepreneurial heart and soul from both my creative parents, as well as the grit to never give up. My heart overflows as I think of all they taught me without ever knowing it.
My grandson Kane is too young to have memories of this time but will now always have a piece of my heart to hold in his hands. May the stories inspire you to reach way high up and grab your own star over and over again.
Thirteen families told their stories to help the world learn some truths about dementia and caregiving. They demonstrate love and compassion in ways which make us all want to be better people. I carry your sacred stories in my heart, and I also dedicate this work to each of you.
FOREWORD
Pictures, photographs, snapshots, whatever you want to call them, all tell a story and represent particular moments captured in time. As a child, my father subscribed to National Geographic and I couldn’t wait to see the amazing photographs from all over the world. I saw animals I had never seen or heard of in their natural habitats. I saw people living in ways I couldn’t imagine. The colors were so vivid, the images so sharp. In my mind I created stories about what these animals and people were doing before and after the photograph was taken.
Each day, I check Instagram and Facebook to see what photographs Carmen Buck has recently posted. She has found a way to capture the most expressive, beautiful moments in such a touching way. In discussions with her, I know she takes dozens of photographs to find that perfect one
that one
that really relates to what was happening at that precise moment.
That’s what a single photograph can do. It can transport you back to that particular time, allowing you to recall sounds, scents, feelings or whatever may come to mind by looking at that particular photograph. The best thing is, you can look at the same photograph a week, a month or a year later and recollect the same memory or discover brand new memories.
As someone Living with Alzheimer’s,
I still look at photographs to recapture moments in time, but mostly to remind myself of the most recent events. Due to the malfunction of my short-term memory, the photos help me remember, or remember what I think
took place.
In the 13 stories Carmen has written, she merged words with photos. The words are touching, emotional, informative, expressive, but the photographs, oh those beautiful poignant photographs, are what really tell the story. Through her lens and her creative eye, Carmen captured images that are now cherished by families who have already lost a loved one or who are now losing someone to the unknown, misunderstood monster called, DEMENTIA!
Seeing my Grandfather and my Mother die with Alzheimer’s and my Father die with Vascular Dementia, I have a pretty good idea of what my end may look like. Between now and then, I choose to live my life as best I can. As an International Dementia Advocate, I speak to varied audiences both big and small, but my message is the same. Just because you have a Dementia-Related Illness does not mean you have to stop living!
So . . . I don’t.
I take photographs, when I remember, of things I want to remember. If I don’t think of them while, in the moment,
I’ll forget and that memory will also be forgotten. It’s the sad truth of what Alzheimer’s does. However, with people like Carmen Buck in the world taking photographs of families and people like me, the memories will live on, and for that, we should all be thankful.
I have no doubt you will enjoy this book. The stories are true, emotional yet filled with love. The photos, well the photos speak for themselves. I’ll let you decide what the images are saying!
Brian LeBlanc
I have Alzheimer’s, BUT, it doesn’t have me for I don’t allow it to define who I am!
‘Just See Me-Sacred Stories from the Other Side of Dementia’ was written so the world could witness the incredible power of storytelling, love and legacy even in the face of tragedy.
PREFACE
You might gently guide into it or take a hard fall on the pavement, but either way, becoming a caregiver is challenging. Your palms sweat, your shoulders painfully seize, you forget to breath deep, new fine lines show on your face, your chest hurts, stomach burns and yet you step forward even as your heels dig in deep. We love with intensity, and caring for someone we love takes grit, tenacity and infinite strength. We take one big step at a time all the while silently wondering; why me, is this real and how will I possibly do this?
The grief can be palpable, but not as strong as the love which ascends from the very pain we want to avoid.
Families in ‘Just See Me-Sacred Stories from the Other Side of Dementia’ opened their hearts and homes to share their stories of becoming caregivers to their loved ones with dementia. Lives were changed in the making of Just See Me. Truths were proudly announced and burdens were lifted. Strengths were uncovered as fears were unveiled. Tears flowed and laughter freely bounced about. Even
