    DEDICATION

These stories are dedicated to four delightful little souls who fill my heart with great happiness. Marley, Liam, Finley, and James, I love you so.

    Introduction

When I was thinking of what type of book I would like to write, I was absolutely certain about one thing. I wanted it to be an old fashioned storybook, the type with beautiful illustrations and tales you could carry deep in your soul for years to come. Finding the perfect artist was no problem since Jonathan Beeson is a dear friend and creative from the top of his head to the tip of his toes. Next would come a year or so of pondering the stories I read to my own children and students over the past thirty years-tales that could make them better citizens, friends, sons and daughters, and human beings for having heard them.

The twelve stories within this book are accompanied with a guide to help the reader engage children in dialogue about the value or moral they contain. There are also suggestions for further story starters, vocabulary builders, and interesting tidbits of information contained within each story.

These stories are meant to be read aloud, curled up on the sofa, or while sitting under a tree, in a comfortable space. Stories can help children and adults make sense of the ever changing globe on which we live. However, there are certainly some things that do not change. There will always be good and bad, war and peace, hope and despair, love and hate, truth and untruth, respect and rudeness, courage and cowardice, joy and pain. Talking about these topics may help us all decide which side we will stand on and in turn, make a difference in our own corners of the world.

Perhaps one of the best ways to make sense of these things is to read and tell stories, to see the worth in what everyone has to say. The stories you read here are tales I have told across the southeast in classrooms and conferences, at festivals and playgrounds. They have often been requested by those who have heard them and I now offer them to you as a gift of encouragement and hope.

    All my best,

    Susan
