    SPECIAL CASES AND BEYOND

Well, here I sit and have nothing to do, so I think I will write something about my past and see where it takes me.

THIS IS A SPECIAL CASE 1.

Well, I am looking at some pictures from the early years.

And I sure had a great team back then. Well, here I go.

The president of the United States called me, and I was getting ready to relax after a case that I had just finished. So I sat down on a chair in the front room. And I had a fire in the fireplace going and a drink of tea and a picture album on my lap and was looking at pictures of some old friends.

Then my phone rang, and I said, Hello, this is Sam. May I help you?

The person said, Just a minute. The president wants to talk to you, Sam.

So I said, OK, president who?

The other voice said,The president of the United States.

Ms. Sam: Oh, that president. OK.

President: Hello, Ms. Sam, I am calling you ’cause I need some help. And you are the one that can do this job for me. I have called around, and everyone that I have talked to says, Call Sam. She is the best detective that we know. So here I am calling you. With a lot of rave reviews about you, so here I go. I have a problem here. I have had some papers disappear, and I need to find them. They were taken about five days ago from my Green Room.

Sam: OK, what kind of papers are you talking about, sir?

President: Well, they are of how we make our nuclear warheads for wartime, and the others are of the underground bunkers in California, where you live.

Sam: Wow, you know where I live, sir.

President: I know just that—you live in California. Sam, that is all. I did not mean to give you the wrong impression.

Sam: That is OK, sir. I have that happen all the time. I just misunderstood. That is all.

President: Anyway, Sam, I will send a car for you on Monday. Is that OK with you? And they will bring you here to meet with me, here at the White House. And it will be very hush-hush. Is that OK with you?

Sam: Well, sure, Mr. President. I will be glad to go there and talk to you.

President: OK then, I will see you on Monday morning, Ms. Sam.

Sam: OK, sir, I will be there about 9 a.m.

President: Ms. Sam, that sounds great. See you then.

    Sam: OK.

Agent Garrison: Ms. Sam, we are coming to the airport. And there is a place for you to rest if you wish to. It will take a couple hours to get to Washington, DC. So you just make yourself at home, OK?

Sam: OK, thank you so much. I have some reading to do. So that is what I will do now.

AG: OK, Ms. Sam. I can get you something to drink if you want something, like coffee or water or some juice.

Sam: Coffee, if you don’t mind. It will keep me intact with whatever I have to do today. Thank you so much.

AG: You are very welcome. And I will let you know when we arrive in Washington, OK?

Sam: Thank you. You are very kind.

As I was looking through the notes from the president, I was thinking of another case that I had a few years ago, but it was not for the president. It was someone else altogether, but it had its twist and turns to it. And it all turned out great.

AG: Ms. Sam, we are coming in for a landing, so we will have you get off here, and the car will pick you up, and we all will go to the White House together.

    Sam: What about my luggage?

AG: I will make sure it is collected for you, OK?

Sam: OK, I will have to take it to the White House with me.

AG: No, Ms. Sam, the president has a room at the hotel for you, and that is all going there with you. I hope that is OK with you.

Sam: Sure, it is OK, but I have to go there and pay for the room.

AG: No, it is all taken care of. Your room number is 198It has a pool out back and a waterfall. I just love the view from some of these rooms here at the hotel. They are so lovely.

Sam: Wow, you stay there much?

AG: Well, yes, I have a place near there, and they are great. Looking at it, I should live there ’cause I am alone and I have no one, so I could afford it.

Sam: Wow. Is this the only place that you have ever lived?

AG: No, I have lived in California, and I loved it there, but I put in for this job, and I have been here ever since. I guess I like my job, so that is why I am still here. But when this job is done, I think I will go back home to California. That is where I was raised.

Sam: I just love California, and I have been there for quite a few years. And I love it. To me, it is just like heaven on earth. The sunshine all the time and the people, that is a great combination for me. I was from Northern California. What about you?

AG: Northern, and I have no kin, so I am here, but I still have a place there. I have a friend staying at my place to keep it up for me. I go for a visit every now and then and see the horses. And now and then, I ride. See, I have three hundred acres of land, and I have twelve horses and a friend that keeps the ranch going for me for another two years, I hope.

    Sam: So why two years?

AG: Well, that is when I can retire, I hope, and then move back home, where I belong.

Sam: Wow, you have your life planned out, huh? Well, I think it sounds great. I sure do miss California when I am gone.

AG: Ms. Sam, when are you going to retire?

Sam: Well, I have about three years. I have been doing this for so long that I have no idea of what to do next anymore.

AG: Have you always been a detective?

Sam: Well, I have been for the last twenty-seven years, yes.

AG: Well, do you enjoy your work?

Sam: Very much. Why do you ask.?

AG: Well, you sound like you want to retire after this job.

Sam: No, I still have a few more miles on me, and I will keep going till I fall down and can’t get up. That is the way that I am. I never give anyone any doubt that I can do my job, ’cause I know that I am good at my job.

AG: That is a good way to think. If you are good at something, then you are going to be happy in your work. My mother always said that to me while I was growing up.

Sam: My mother always said that too. And you know what, it has been very true for me, ’cause I have been doing this for twenty-seven years, and I love it.

AG: So it is true then. I just thought that was just another ole wives’ tale, ’cause mothers are good at that.

Sam: Well, I know my mother was great with me growing up, and I sure would like to know more of her sayings.

AG: Well, Ms. Sam, we are here at the White House. And I will let the president know that you are here, OK, Ms. Sam?

Sam: Sure, I will wait till you get back. Here comes someone, and it looks like the president, walking my way. (As I get out of the car, he reaches down to help me out.)

President: Hello, Ms. Sam, I am the president, and it is good to meet you. We have talked on the phone, but we have never met.

Sam: Well, sir, it is a pleasure to meet you and to be here in Washington, DC.

President: Let’s go in to the dish room and talk, OK?

Sam: Yes, sir, that is fine with me. And you can tell me about these plans that are missing. I understand they are blueprints of the nuclear warheads and the blueprints for the underground bunkers in California, right?

President: Yes, those are the plans, but I have some more that are missing too.

Sam: OK, and what are they?

President: Well, I have been working on some plans for making some torpedoes that are finished plans. Please, Ms. Sam, I need your help getting these back.

Sam: Well, I will do my best, and I have some people that I can get to work with me, and we can get started as soon as I get back home, OK?

President: That sounds great. Would you like something to drink, Ms. Sam, like coffee or tea?

Sam: No, sir. I think I better get back and get started on finding out where your plans have gone. But thank you, anyway.

President: Well, I will call AG for you to go back home, OK?

Sam: Thank you. That would be very nice of you. And it has been a pleasure meeting you, and I hope that you are not disapointed with my work, ’cause I do get what I am looking for.

President: Well, it was so nice to finally meet you too, Ms. Sam, and if you need anything, just call me. I have my number on your phone, OK?
