About this ebook

When Lukes wife died in 2006, Luke struggled with loneliness and depression. He day-traded stocks and regularly visited casinos to escape world realities. Julies husband died in 2005, and she became a widow at a young age. In early 2008, Luke became bored with being a widower and signed up for an online dating service. Thats when he met Julie.

In Memoir of a Second Marriage in a Digital World, author Paul Jazzy offers a fictionalized memoir, narrating the story of Luke and Julie as they meet later in life, live together, get married, and share a host of experiences. It tells how, externally, their marriage seemed like it was made in heaven. But internally, problems developed and the couple eventually divorced.

Memoir of a Second Marriage in a Digital World offers an inside look into Lukes and Julies relationship, one that started on the Internet. It tells how one couple, both experiencing second marriages, tried finding love again.

    INTRODUCTION

T he technological innovations of the last few decades have had impacts on our lives in many different ways including how we go about finding new partners. The second marriage brings in altogether different changes in our thinking because as we get older, we become wiser. We become financially more independent especially when being in retirement age. Children would have finished their college education and moved out therefore less dependent on their parents. In this particular case, both individuals are in retirement therefore time is not of critical importance. On the flip side, however, as we get older, it becomes more difficult to change in the way we are used to doing things. This story is intended to expand on each one of these points.

This love story takes place between a widow(Julie) and widower(Luke), both in their sixties and having lost their spouses. They enter into a second marriage and experience the married life late in their lives, each with baggage. To establish a continuity in reading the story, the author feels that it is necessary to present a biography of each first so that the story makes sense.

    LUKE

L uke came to United States in 1960 to attend college. Because he had studied English to be his foreign language, it was extremely easy for him to understand what people would say as was the case with reading. But that was a mixed blessing. On one hand it helped him a lot, on the other, he had developed a heavy accent to the point that, at times, he would talk and people never understood what he was saying.

During college, he found the science classes to be very much like what he studied in high school. In fact, he found some of those subjects to be extremely easy almost to the point that they required no extensive studying to prepare for classes and exams. OTOH, there were classes which were a complete disaster, for example, English. Unlike today's universities, the colleges then did not offer the English class as second language thereby making it easier for foreign students. To compensate for the poor grades in English, he was able to achieve high grades in science classes. After the second year, he was on honor roll on a continuous basis.

After completing his studies in electrical engineering, he was able to earn the long awaited degree. While interviewing for a job, the employer was kind enough to offer him a temporary job during Easter Vacation during which he earned his very first paycheck. He immediately ran to the bank across the street and cashed the check. That was a prosperous day for Luke and it would be no exaggeration to say that he never felt that rich since then.

He was determined to advance his education further. He was able to get a simple teaching job while studied for his graduate degree. In 1966, he was able to complete his studies and earned an MS degree in EE. According to Luke, that sure was a big deal then but not now. If anything, it was a complete waste of time. To make things even worse, he applied to several universities and was accepted for their PhD programs, yet another big deal.

Soon, he came to the realization that there were other things in life to do and enjoy besides earning degrees. He was able to get a fairly good paying job with one of the major auto manufacturers in Michigan. He worked at this job for 3.5 years. During this time, his upper
