The Futility of My Breath - Adam C Smith
A HEART WITHOUT A HOME
Like a clock that’s always broken,
I’ve pretended time stood still.
I’ve wallowed in my self-destruction,
Like a soldier too afraid to kill.
A somber tone of solace
Seems the order of our thought.
Collective hate and ignorance
This story absent of a plot.
Tears that hide behind a smile,
We tell ourselves we’re unafraid.
We’re slowly picked from time to time
To live our lives with the decayed.
You justify what needs not be.
You create a purpose out of none.
Like a meal without a recipe,
You’ll never know when it is done.
We disregard these blessed moments
As we fill our time with vanity.
Our stories lost within ourselves;
Pushing closer to insanity.
ELEGANCE
The revolver is my pen.
The paper is my heart.
Last words upon my lips,
No new place where I can start.
A choice of mine that I hold so dear.
A love of mine that creates my fear.
I’ve resented all that I’ve become.
I’ve forgotten what I thought was true.
If only I had open eyes,
And all my life came into view.
The banality of needing help,
This knowledge seems to guide me.
Like a boat without a paddle
Or the hangman who untied me.
The curse of understanding
My lack of constitution.
I’ll end this fight and close my eyes,
A glitch with no solution.
A thought of wishing I was free,
But mired in stale confusion.
A sense of guilt as I
