Lord Keep Me in This Mold - Marjorie Brame Bennett
The Molding Continues
Life has been so busy in the Melvyn Britt household. The couple is working long hours to ensure financial security and guarantee funds to send their child and subsequent children to the college of their choice. The expenses for educating a child twenty years from now would be unimaginable. After all, he is preparing for a child he helped to create! He finds himself extending the budget just to buy items for what he secretly hopes will be a son.
Rebecca wants to work as long as she can before going on maternity leave. She dreads being away from the job that she loves so much. She feels so productive testing organisms in the biochemistry lab, creating new solutions to ward off potential health crisis. She has only been on this job for three years, but she has accomplished so much it appears. Rebecca has spent many hours chatting with Dorothy about some of her successes and disappointments during her years of finding solutions for her hip pains.
Thank God, Dorothy found Dr. McDougal when she did! She has had so few problems with that type pain since,
Rebecca thought.
It is Saturday early in the morning. Rebecca wanted to sleep a little later than she normally arose during weekdays. She is in her second trimester and little did she know, little baby Britt would start kicking around 5:00 a.m. as though the kicks were to be her alarm clock and get her to move around some, and allowing an opportunity to stretch its little short legs.
Rebecca often lovingly rubs her belly in circles, telling baby Britt, It is okay, baby, Mama is going to do everything she can to make you comfortable.
Then she very softly begins to sing a little song her grandpa sang to her, to Joi and to her older brothers while they were still at the age of sitting on his lap,
"Baby, bye, here’s a fly.
Let us watch him, you and I.
How he crawls up the wall.
Yet, he never falls."
There is another verse to this cute little song that Rebecca will never forget and wants to teach to her children as well. However, she never wants to wake up Melvyn at the time, so she usually reserves singing the other verses for later.
As she twists her robustly round body to become comfortable, she realizes her song has soothed baby Britt into complete tranquility and stillness.
Rebecca relaxes and falls asleep in Melvyn’s recliner chair that has become hers since her third month of pregnancy.
In what seems to have been minutes, the telephone rings. Rebecca glances at the clock on the baby’s room wall. It is 7:00 a.m.! She wobbles to the door and says hello.
Juliette’s voice chimes in with a hearty Good morning, my best friend!
Rebecca knows things are going well whenever Juliette refers to her by that name.
This better be good for you to call me this early and on a Saturday morning at that, girl friend,
Rebecca warned.
Oh, it is, but probably not the way you mean it,
Juliette replied.
A pause to collect her presentation causes Rebecca to become anxious to hear the reason for the call.
Well, I have been up since three o’clock. My stomach is cramping like never before. It kind of feels like menstrual cramps, but my cycle is not due for another two weeks. I’m glad it’s Saturday because I would have to call in sick otherwise. But on the other hand, Dr. Dixon’s office is closed and I don’t want to go the Urgent Health Care Clinic,
Juliette explained.
Oh, it’s probably just a stomach virus. You know there has been an epidemic of those lately,
Rebecca consoled.
You’re probably right. I think I will fix me a cup of ginger tea. That has always soothed my stomach when I started with a virus. Okay, thanks, best friend, I am sorry to have called you so early, but with Delvyn away, I know I can count on you to be my backup counselor,
Juliette defended as she disconnected the call.
Rebecca resumed her nap. She had to get ample sleep to protect the baby. Plus, she had learned that once the baby gets here, a good night’s sleep will be far away and infrequent.
Melvyn saw Rebecca crawling back into bed and decided to allow her to sleep for as long as she desired. He slowly moved away from the bedroom and went into the bathroom to freshen up. He then decided to go into the kitchen to start a simple breakfast. Since he could not cook, he repeated his infamous combination of one boiled egg, two slices of turkey bacon, one piece of whole wheat toast, and a large glass of freshly squeezed orange juice. All he wanted was to make his bride smile.
By eleven that morning, Rebecca awakened bright-eyed and bushy-tailed. She felt she could conquer the world! That was great since Emma called to see if she could come over for a short visit.
When Emma arrived, she greeted Rebecca with an overwhelming smile.
Oh, I’m glad to see you’re in such a happy mood today,
approached Rebecca.
Gosh, it’s easy when things are going this well. You see, the Director of the Veterinary Department has offered me a part-time permanent job in his office. Girl, I just cannot believe this! Especially since I have not graduated from undergraduate yet. He said if I do well in this part-time job, I am almost guaranteed a full-time position when I graduate in the spring. Can you believe that, Rebecca?
Emma completed her ranting.
Yes, Emma, I can believe that. You must realize all the talent you have and how much energy you put into doing a good job. What boss would not want an employee like you?
Rebecca replied in joy for Emma.
Well, Rebecca, I just stopped by to share my good news. I am really on my way to the lab to catch up on a few loose ends from last week. This way, I can get a fresh start on Monday. You know I don’t want to miss church on Sunday. And I don’t want Rev. James calling me to see why I was not there. He is so awesome!
Yes,
Rebecca concurred.
As Emma exited the front door, Rebecca reminisced on the change in personality of Emma since they met at London-Jeffreys High School. Oh, what a tremendous change!
she thought. Rebecca’s thoughts were pursued with the scripture, "Now to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us, to Him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus, throughout all generations forever and ever." (Ephesians 3:20–21 NIV)
Rebecca has seen this scripture fulfilled in Emma. She cannot remember witnessing Emma being sarcastic or bullying anyone since she promised Rev. James she would turn her life around. When Rebecca met Emma’s grandmother, Mrs. Tutt, over the telephone, she thanked her for her influence on Emma during the last three years. She also expressed surprise in the change she had seen in her grandbaby girl.
Lue And Joe Pay A Surprise Visit
It was Sunday morning, and Rebecca’s parents, Joe and Lue, surprised Rebecca by entering the sanctuary of Reynolds Street Baptist Church. Lue rejoiced at the body twitching wide grin on Rebecca’s face upon realizing their presence. Joe and Melvyn reached to shake each other’s hand, with approval as well. It was almost time for the Call to Worship, so they resolved their greetings to take part in this awesome service. Clergy proceeded with the worship, then the choir began to sing, We Are So Blessed.
This song always brought joy to the hearts of the congregation because everybody there really felt blessings in their lives, in spite of the obstacles they often encountered.
Rev. James looked over his congregation as he searched for visitors. He spotted Joe and Lue Allen.
It is such a nice surprise to have Rebecca’s parents worshipping again with us today. It is a great pleasure, and we hope you are impressed enough to come again,
he greeted them from the podium. We want all our visitors to know we welcome you with every breadth of gratitude we have.
When Rev. James introduced his sermon topic, it was taken from the book of John 2:1–11. He began to read:
An Amazing Senior Year For Emma
The school year starts, and for the first time, Emma is on campus without her best friends, Rebecca and Juliette. She knew she would miss them, but did not imagine survival without them. Success was her priority, and she wanted them to be proud of her. Studying was difficult without them in a sense, yet easier because she knew she would have to stand on her own two feet.
Fortunately, she was in a major she realized was just right for her. Emma never thought about the diversity in mathematical expertise one might need in plain life application circumstances. Everything she could think of required some level of math. With this in mind, Emma found herself voluntarily creating financial calculations to augment her analytical abilities. Juliette, having a degree in mathematics, was able to provide much support wherever needed.
Whenever she could, Emma was researching ways to invest small amounts of cash to realize revenue for her grandmother in her retirement years. This was inevitable since Gran’s annualized income had always been so minimal. There was no way to invest for profit, she thought.
Then one day, Professor Philpot, her department chairperson, introduced Dr. Nathaniel Geter, CEO of a Fortune 500 Company’s Investment Division, to speak to her class about investments.
Dr. Geter introduced his presentation with the subject of Current Assets and Working Capital and Asset Management. Working Capital Management and Inventory and Accounts Receivable are the three main focuses in operating any successful investment company. It is important to ensure the company’s cash flow remains positive, conversion to cash is its best potential. Working capital consists of cash, marketable securities, accounts receivable, and inventory. Our company’s current assets are these. Our fixed capital includes plants, equipment, and property. The presentation will focus on managing the company’s working capital.
Emma knew then that this was something she had wanted to learn ever since she was a little girl watching her grandmother struggle with her disposable income. She felt her personality was built around her anger and fear of living a life of poverty. She did not know how to show her grandmother her fears
