The Tournament
It was sunny and warm. The summer morning was filled with anticipation. Johnny was very excited because his dad, Mr. Parr, was going to take him and his three friends to their first professional golf tournament. Billy, Tommy, Freddie, and Johnny all jumped into the car.
It’s a beautiful day,
said Mr. Parr, and we are going to have a lot of fun.
The boys hopped out of the car just as they arrived. Easy does it!
shouted Mr. Parr when they started to run. We have to conduct ourselves properly, and that means no running or loud talking.
Can’t we talk at all, Mr. Parr?
asked Billy.
Of course we can. Remember, we’re here to have fun, but we need to show courtesy and respect to the people and the players.
How do we do that?
asked Freddie.
I can tell you,
he replied, that the most important thing to do is not to talk or move while a player is making his swing. We don’t want to distract him and cause him to make a bad shot. You will see that everyone is always respectful to the players.
Mr. Parr and the four boys happily started walking toward the entrance. Johnny couldn’t believe how many people were there! Hundreds of people were walking everywhere. They were watching the players and talking to each other, but Johnny could barely hear them.
Look!
said Mr. Parr. There is a ball in the fairway. I see a player walking up to it and getting ready to play. Let’s go watch!
They all headed toward the rope that separates the players from the people. Johnny was amazed at what he saw. The player must have been six feet tall, and he looked so athletic.
I’ll bet he can play any sport well, thought Johnny to himself.
