About this ebook

In this book I wanted to express the loneliness and love two children had for their parents and how they suffered very much in finding themselves and the courage they had to find their loved ones. The parts about the grandparents was the words my grandparents would say, and how my great-grandmother would be on Sundays in the pulpit with the preacher because she also had the calling to preach and would tell the preacher that he had preached enough and it was her time to preach, right in front of the congregation. We would just laugh so hard and run out of the little church and try to crack some hard black walnuts. My mother was a musician and played the piano in church; my step-father was a preacher, and he had two churches, so I also remember church times. The rest of the book is fictional.

Author

Margie KGR-Jones

Margie Reynolds-Jones has written three other unpublished fictional books that she likes to indulge in and she writes occasionally. Much more since she has retired from working in the business industry and prior owner of an accounting business, teaching high school computer applications and accounting. The latest book she is working on would be the accounting of “Just Making Debits & Credits Easier.” She has a creative mind for fiction writing and hopes all enjoy “Two Kids Fate.” Love and best wishes to my three sons, Jahmaal, Rashaad, and Aaron Reynolds; they are the way you would want your sons to be: loving, kind, and generous. Also, my grandsons, Daniel, AJ, Jasmine, Isaiah, Molly, Josiah, Jeremiah; sisters, Carrie, Jackie; brother, Anthony; and deceased sister, Cle, who would always say to me when times were hard to “Keep a kickin’, girl.”

    Chapter # 1

This morning appears straight awesome to me, considering all the snow we’ve had during the winter months. People consider this time of year as, Mid-autumn and I’m too young to understand much about the seasons. Whatever year it is; I can only say maybe 1927, in Virginia. But it’s still cool and crisp with the early morning dew still visible on the mint green grass with the grassy white tips spiking long and straight.

I love to look at the many Marigold flowers & Primrose stems that are all so newly green! Barely budded and all sorts of plant colors to me seem to be held hostage; as the dew drops on them. I really get off on this part of watching the dew very closely, that it almost stands still before dropping on other spikes of grass and it drops dew on the pride and joy of Virginia, which is what my grandmamma would say.

All gleaming moist white petals of dew drops ultimately a splashing on the ground as the mountains stand tall and fierce off in the distance. There are pale yellow Peri Winkles flowers and small rocks along the little dusty road way, that Charly and I run desperately to get as far away from old man Gardner as we can.

Lourdes and Charyl are just two kids roaming around in their home vicinity, feeling somewhat confused about what is going on in their life, and the destiny of their well being. By me being a girl, at twelve years old, I sometimes considers myself as being experienced; and I’m sure others would say, I’m only a baby. My Grand Papa told us all the time that Franklin-County- Virginia, is considered the Moonshine Capital of the World and to remember the Capital of Virginia is Charleston, which incorporates, a lot of kidnapping for prostitution, gambling and thievery here in these parts of Virginia.

My father would also say Remember Franklin County is located in the Appalachian region of Southern U.S. border by Kentucky to the South, Ohio to the North West Maryland to the North East. I really didn’t understand that either, cause I was too young and still is. Though as I’ve been told, the little town called Cross Myers is where Charyl and I were born back in 1915 & 1927. I suppose I’m the one born in 1915, and Charyl in1927, something like, "where the green grass grows long and money is very scarce for most families’ that’s what the preacher would say on Sunday’s.

It seems as though we lived further out in the rural country part of town, where a house is about a mile from other homes, since I’m not sure about a mile, I just repeat what I’ve heard.

As I’ve been told, my father is a Baptist preacher, which that much I knew and whom my brother and I haven’t seen since he ran away. Probably somewhat forever! That’s what my Grandmama said. That episode, happened about two years ago, and our mom was the pianist at that church. Course I’m young and I read a lot, therefore I can express myself most sufficiently, when necessarroie.

Our grand mama, who wanted all grand-kids to call her ‘Mama’, and our great grandmother, she wanted the kids to call her Mamall which means the mama of all grandchildren; she use to say. Right now, my brother and I have wonder off from home trying to find where my father went, and my Mom’s suddenly not at home either; so we are trying to put our family members back in place.

My brother calls me Lourdes, and I calls him Charyl, which sometimes I might sound mean to him when I’m being serious. But we got to keep moving along and I’m telling him now……. You better hurry up, you know that Ma might surely be calling us to come and eat, boy, Huh? Charly said. Lourdes, will you help me? My (sweater) zipper is stuck" Charyl said.

Oh you are just like those treacherous Zmooner’s, that lived down by Lake Toburn Treacherous Zmooner’s. What is that? said Charyl. They are a certain type of people that are ready to betray ya. Now! That best fits them. Now give me your hand, we got to run and take the ‘back woods’.

My grandmother would say Back Woods. Don’t you know that old man Gardner will be coming with those old horses? Said Lourdes. My shoes are coming off Charyl said. Come on we can’t stop. I will pick you up, cause you know we will be in trouble, if he catches up with us; and if we don’t get home, cause I thought I heard Ma" calling us, when you were trying to pee back there. Said Charyl

    The Firer !!!

Where is he now, Lourdes? Can you see him? Charyl said. Lourdes was silent, trying to concentrate on not letting old man Gardner find them. As we slowed down and rushed quickly around the old bent over, Oak tree that is down by the Lake¼. We stopped and peeked back to see if old man Gardner was on our tracks. Aaaaaaahhh! STOP! Ahhhhhhhh, Ahh, Mama Mamaaaaaa! give me your hand, you little contrary kids said old man Gardner. Stop! let me go! Now!, Let me GOooooooo! You stinky old man Mr. Gardner had snuck up on us!

Just settle down now, Just settle down, old man -Gardner said.

Our Mama is calling us, and she will be here any minute. Lourdes!, Lodes! Charyl said. What is it What ? Look ooo, look, a fire!, Firrer! Maaa, Come on Charly. No, yall can’t go that way, Mr. Gardner said. Ohhh yes, we are going, you old coock Lourdes said.

Just let me say, that the bridge has burned down and everything over in that direction, it’s all burn down, The old man Gardner said.

Old man Gardner, got in his horse wagon and road off down the rocky dusty trail. We had not realized how far we were from home after roaming, I think maybe for two days. thought Lourdes. Looks’ like we had roamed off to Lake Moomaw and now we are tired and decided to sleep in this old deserted Cabin ahead of us, on the hill that we are approaching. Suddenly there he was, just crossing our path, as we were approaching the Cabin. Lourdes was startled by his frumpy body with a dusty gray felt cowboy hat on and old black pants which had turned brownish orange around the edges Liaar, you LIARRR, move out of our way "I thought you were going the other way? Screamed Lourdes. Mr. Gardner, never uttered a word, and kept flicking the whip on his old gray mare horse to move on down the smoky path. So, looks like Mr. Gardner is going to leave us along and keep going; thought Lourdes. We were both afraid of Old man Gardner, only because he never really said much to us, he would just ride on his wagon with his one horse down the unpaved rocky, dusty road pass our house all the time.

    Charyl’s Reminiscing

Knock! Knock! Is anybody here? Screamed Lourdes as they started pushing the large wooden black door. Then, she thought I better keep knocking as we’re going in here. Right Charyl. Said Lourdes. The cabin is or was really someone’s old house, that look like it wasn’t built very well, with no windows in the first room. Charyl, kept squeezing Lourdes hand and feeling scary, stepping short steps and looking up and Lourdes at every step they took. They both simultaneously, let out a huge sigh and Charyl’s little arm and knees just dropped to the dusty wooden floor, as Lourdes grabbed and hugged him closer as they walked through the one bedroom, with only a mattress in it. ok I guess we will have to be satisfied with where we are, Charyl, so I’m going to spread my coat down over in the corner of this bedroom, so we can be hugged together to stay warm through the night,. Ok Charyl"? Charyl, was making sounds, and Lourdes looked down and he had fallen asleep. They both settle down for the night in the proven to be a safe cabin. As the morning broke with a sunny shine, Lourdes and Charyl pulled themselves to gather to go about their way. Lourdes and Charyl were thrashing themselves through paths that they had never taken before to get home.

There’s our church, Charyl said; in his rumbling out of breathe voice as we were running past. Charyl started reminiscing loudly… Are the hickory nuts ripe? and how good they were.. as we use to sneak out of church to pluck off the nuts… when we use to attend church with both of our parents and grandparents.

But, he can’t think about that now, we must keep rushing to get home, and if there is going to be a home since the fire has apparently burned a lot of land.

Charyl kept thinking about those nuts out loud………. and how he thought "only a few nuts grew on a small vine up against the side of the little Church and those nuts were the were the hardest nuts to crack.

    Charly Gets Hurt

I got something to say about those nuts and sometimes we never were able to crack them most of the time, we had to use a brick to bust them open for goodness sakes. Thought Lourdes.

The Smokey fire was burning down our usual path way home and bristles from the bushes were fiery hot as we pass, and I can see tips of Charyl’s hair being synched by firer as Lourdes thought. I’d better rub my hair to see if I’m a firer.

I can see a barns, horses and a wagon smoking with firer, and people running with buckets of water from the lakes nearby to put out the firer burning their trucks, and everything. Now we must take the long way, through the valley near the swamp and around the thick brushy bushes that had thorns.

Unfortunately, this path leads down by the neighbors where real mean and dirty looking people that had once told
