    Dedications

First off let me say this book is dedicated to the world’s greatest parents Orlin and Dorothy Lampman.

To Helen and Jim Vest, our best friends who got us married on the mountain in Tennessee.

To Sandy, who brightens my day with her smiles, a wonderful wife.

To Dave Friske who you can count on to ride the river with even when the boats leakin’.

To Winston Whitford, thanks for a lifetime of friendship.

And to my brother Don who died in a car accident in 62’, gone but never forgotten!

The Days of the Wild West

During the western expansion of the United State what is generally referred to as the Wild West. Sometimes things happened that defy man’s ability to explain or understand. During the hardest times someone or something intervened. Some people would say it was angels. In case of the Jose Garcia, when man was about to make a grievous mistake, someone would say an angel intervened. Time and time again when they were most needed, the Lord sent some of his emissaries to help.

Most of these stories were told to me by an old lady who was born at the end of the Civil War and grew up in the time of Billy the Kid, Wyatt Earp and Doc Holiday, the cattle drives and the wagon trains headed west. If you could have looked in those tired old eyes as I did, you would have taken what she had to say as gospel. What you choose to believe my friends is up to you!

Preamble to: My Helper and our Guardian

Sometimes in the Wild West, when all seemed lost, someone was sent to help, so in the case of my helper and our guardian.

    My Helper and our Guardian

One of the greatest fears of people in the west, which during the 1870’s was what we called the Wild, was desolation. People had to go to town for supplies. Someone had to stay home to feed the cattle, hogs and chicken. And the cows had to be milked and stored. It was stored away in the springhouse where it could stay cool and not sour.

This is a story told to me by an old lady that swore absolutely true. If you could have looked into those old eyes, you could believe it just like I did. This is about a family called the Warrens.

One particular morning Mr. Warren had saddled up early to go to town for supplies. He wanted to get an early start so he could be home by dark. He buckled a belt full of cartridges around his waist from which hung a Colts revolver. He put a rifle in the saddle boot, kissed his wife goodbye and rode off for town. The day dragged on, out there on the prairie. There was not much to do during the day; Ms. Warren did have a couple of books that she had read until the covers wore off.Along about four o’clock, she put some potatoes and carrots in a pot to boil and when they were done, she set them aside and went out to the barn to do chores. She
