About this ebook
He told his story to a hawk on Achill Island. He variously transformed into the birdlike creatures of hawk and eagle. He also assumed the shape of a one-eyed salmon.
Satan offers Shaun enough leather to make shoes for thirteen years provided he goes with him after that.
Satan has horns on his head, flames coming from his nostrils and his nails are bent and twisted.
Shauns story took place long after ancient times and long before modern times.

The Three Wishes
Long, long ago, there was a man named Shaun who was a shoemaker. He had a small, nice comfortable house at the bottom of a hill on the sheltered side of the mountain. He had a sugan chair, which he had made for himself from hay, and it was usual for him to sit in it in the afternoon when the works of the day were done, and when he sat in it he was satisfied.
He had a meal bag hanging beside the fire and now and again he used to put his hand in and take the full of his hand of meal and he used to chew it at his ease.
There was an apple-tree growing outside the door and when he was thirsty from chewing the meal, he put his hand on the tree and took an apple and ate it. One day as he was making shoes he noticed that he didn’t have enough leather, enough hemp or enough wax. The side was made up and the last piece was placed and he had to go to get material before he could make any more shoes. He set off with only three shillings in his pocket and he was only a mile from the house when he met a poor person begging for alms.
Give me something on behalf of Our Saviour and for the souls of the dead, and for your own health.
Shaun gave him a shilling, and then all he had was two shillings.
He said to himself that the two shillings would probably be enough. He was only gone another mile from home when a poor woman met him and she was bare-footed.
Give me some help,
she said, on behalf of the Saviour, on behalf of the souls of the dead, and for your own health.
He took pity on her, gave her a shilling and she went off. He now had only one shilling left, but he continued on expecting that perhaps some chance might happen that would enable him to do his business.
It wasn’t long until he met a child and he was crying from hunger and thirst.
On behalf of the Saviour,
said the child, give me something to eat.
There was a hotel beside them. Shaun went in, bought a loaf of bread and gave it to the child. When the child got the bread he changed his shape. He grew up in height. There was such a wonderful bright light in his eyes and in his features that Shaun got scared. It took him all he could do to stop fainting. As soon as he could, he asked, What kind of person are you?
The answer he got was "Shaun, God is grateful to you. I am an angel. I am the third angel you gave alms to today on behalf of the Saviour and now you’ve got three wishes from the God of Glory. Ask of God any three wishes you like and you will receive them.
