CHAPTER 1

K ATE’S HUSBAND WAS killed in a car accident they were married for twenty five years. He was a good provider, she thought to herself you have had two bad marriages this one was the best out of three.

Everyone had to leave to leave her girls had to go to work. She just sat in her recliner thinking what to do now with her life. Could just sell your house and move back to her home town. It took her six months to finally make her mind up to move back to Arkansas. She would be closer to her children. David had plenty of life insurance left her well off not ubber rich, but she could do pretty much what she wanted. Now I need to get rid of a lot of his things most she would give to her grandsons and her daughter Aaron.

When she arrived back to her home town she called her best friend Shelby and were going to find her a place to buy. So what you think Kate. Do you like this condo? Well Shelby it’s big enough four bedrooms and five baths lots of space. Did you see those walk in closets in the master bedroom. Yes I did me also like that bathroom the shower is huge. Yeah Kate big enough for two.

Oh please Shelby you can be so crazy. You know that den you can turn into an office. I sure can didn’t think about that my friend.

Kate you know Kristen is coming in town tomorrow she can tell you where to put your furniture and hang things. Well I could sure use some help there I’m not a decorator at all. I’m staying at the Hilton if she wants she can stay with me. Well you know dip shit is coming also. Oh are they still married. Hell yes Kate and Gary hates him with a passion. Ok he can stay also why not. Thanks my dear sweet friend. Oh cut the crap you know I’m a sucker when it comes to Kristen. Well I have plenty of bedrooms in that suite. I still remember that reception of hers why did I we get so drunk? I still don’t remember too much about that reception do you Shelby. Hell no I don’t even know how I got home. Just tell her to ask for the Hayes suite. Well you know Cain’s Dad and Mom got a divorce. I think she reconnected with an old boyfriend. Oh really that’s strange. Why so strange Kate the new husband has more money. Well kiss a fat man’s ass running and laughed. Where do you get those sayings Kate? You know me I have skills and smiled. I have really missed you not living here. Yeah so have I. Ok let’s go eat I’m starving. Where should we go? Well Shelby it’s been several years since I’ve lived here, but is that place still on the lake we use to eat. It sure is let’s go. The food was still as good as she remembered. They both drank a glass of wine. You know even after all the years I lived away we still have remained best friends. Yep that’s the way we roll. I need to tell you something Kate. What is it I have a have something on my teeth. No not that. What then? Ok listen I think Cain’s father is coming. You remember Ron? Oh hell Shelby that night was a blur.

I know my friend it is still to me also. They want to go to the races. Oh I see do they want me to take them and him. I think so. Oh that’s nice Shelby I’m really embarrassed about that night. Oh hell Kate we all are but Kristen she shows that dvd to anyone who wants to see it and laughed. I’m glad you think that’s so funny I don’t then she started laughing it was funny huh. We are so demented you know that don’t you. I guess we need to go I need to get settled in before my company comes.

When Kate got back to her suite she put on her bathing suit and went for a swim. The pool is an indoor one and she was so happy for that no sun or cold weather to stop her. She was looking at herself in the mirror you know you don’t look so bad for an almost sixty year old woman. She swam her ten laps and was standing at the elevator and Shelby walked up to her. Hey what’s wrong? Kate asked? What makes you think something is wrong. Spill it Shelby. Know don’t be pissed. Why would I be pissed Shelby. Ok Cain’s Dad is coming for sure. Oh I see and I suppose you told them that he could stay here. Well I sort of did. Oh shit Shelby well I guess its ok I have plenty of room here it’s a three bedroom suite. I just hope he doesn’t think I drink like I did. We did have fun though. Hell yes we did.

Kristen and Cain came early the next day. Wow Aunt Kate this place is so nice and huge. Well you know sweetie I need the space where ever I go. So let’s go see your new condo. Mom said it’s on the lake. I love the lake to me it’s so peaceful. Oh I also remember how much you like to swim. Yep I still do. When they arrived at the condo Kristen was so impressed. I love this place you don’t have to do very much as far as decorating. Just hang a few things here and there. Well thanks for your input sweetie.

What time is your Dad coming in today Cain. I think about four this afternoon Ms. Kate. Well then we can go out for drinks and eat. I’ll have a car service come pick us up so we can have some fun. Now we need to go down stairs to the spa I need a facial and a mini Pedi. Kate and Shelby were sitting side by side getting their pedicures. Ok I have a sixty four thousand dollar question for you Kate. Ok let me guess Shelby you want to know when I am going to start dating right. Hell yes when are you it’s not nineteen ten you know you can date Kate. I know in time I will I promise. I’m sure the oldest daughter has someone in mind he’s probably a professor and eighty and they both laughed.

Now about tonight where should we eat? We who do you have a mouse in your pocket Kate? What the hell so you’re not coming. Hell no I can’t stand Cain I tolerate him at holidays and birthdays only. Oh so I have to put up with the assholes not Kristen but you know who. You can do this for a short time I want them to have fun. Ok then I guess I’ll take them to the races tomorrow. Now that’s out of the way. What should I wear tonight? I like this green blouse and the black pants and don’t forget those boots of yours Kate. I probably should wear a sweater. No wear that blouse ok. I guess so does it look ok with my hair. Yes it does I wouldn’t let you go out looking like a hot mess. That green looks good with your hair with those auburn high lights. I guess I’ll get dressed now. I’m leaving before Ron gets here I have got to cook supper for Gary. Tell him hello for me.

Kate had just finished putting on her clothes when Ron arrived. Cain and Kristen were glad to see him hadn’t seen him in a week. When Kate walked in the living room Ron smiled and said glad to see you. Now I must have really been drunk that night because she didn’t remember him looking this good. He had sandy colored hair and hazel colored eyes probably six feet two inches tall. It’s nice to see you again Kate. Oh how she hoped he didn’t remember her that night so drunk and having a lot of fun at the reception. Oh lord please let Shelby be lying about showing everyone that DVD. Kate was heavier then she had lost a lot of weight. Oh please don’t let him remember me. Ron said I think I remember you, but I met a lot of people that night of the wedding. I bet you remember my late husband David he loved to hunt. Oh I do him and Matt talked turkey hunting. I’m sorry to hear about the accident. It was a car wreck right. Yes it was a drunk driver. David didn’t drink at all or smoke.

I made reservations for us at this restaurant on the lake the food is very good. Is eating at six thirty ok? Oh that time is fine Kate. OH where are my manners Cain show you dad his room. No problem come on old man and laughed. When Ron closed the bedroom door I can’t believe that’s the same woman in that DVD son. Well Dad one in the same. Wow she is one fine looking woman son. Cain laughed ok Dad calm down now don’t want you to have a heart attack. Oh yes we’re going to the races tomorrow she knows an owner who isn’t using his reserved seats tomorrow and offered them to us. She hasn’t decided to take him up on them or not. I overheard Ms. Kate talking to Ms. Shelby and I think they dated and now he’s not married and she doesn’t want to give him any ideas. Well son I can’t blame her you know. Dad I saw the way you looked at her and I don’t think she wants a relationship just yet. Ok then I want you to tell your wife not to mention that DVD to Kate. What do you mean? Well I know she was a little drunk and probably a little embarrassed so I don’t want her to think I remember her and the way she acted. Got you Dad no problems

CHAPTER 2

T HE CAR SERVICE sent a stretch limo to pick them up and took them to the restaurant. Everyone seemed to be having a good time when the hostess came over to their table. There is someone here and wants to know if it’s ok to come over to your table. Kate had a surprised look on her face. Should I tell him to come over to the table ma’am? Oh yes of course. She looked up and in walked Scotty over to their table. Wow he looked as good as ever with his tall self. It brought back memories of her past with him. Oh my I thought you weren’t coming in this week. He gave her a tight hug and all she could think about was the way he held her after their love making. Oh you remember Shelby. Why of course I do I see her at the track. Well this is her daughter Kristen and her husband Cain and his father Ron. Glad to meet you. It’s always a pleasure to see you Kate. We are going to the club next door if you and your company would like to join us. We’ll see we might take you up on that. Cain looked at Kate is that the guy you were talking about. Oh no that’s his friend. I dated Scotty several years ago. He worked at the barn at the track I thought he was an exercise boy. Well that’s what they called them back in the day now they are riders. So now we should not go to the box seats tomorrow.

Ron looked at her he thought she looks like she still cares for that guy and that made him more interested. You know we can always got to the club upstairs at the track and gamble also we can bet on the horses if you want to. Ron looked at her with those drop dead eyes of his and said it’s up to you Kat. She looked at him only her late husband David called her that. Her name is Katherine and her family called her Kate. Well we’ll worry about that tomorrow. Oh we also can go into the infield.

The food and talk were good. Kate and Ron had a lot in common they found out. Hey where did the kids go? Did we ignore them too much and they left. It seems that way and looked at her. So where did they go. Let me call Cain. The waiter brought the check to the table and looked confused like who do I give this to. Kate took the ticket and said thank you. Ron took it from her and said please let me treat you are being so kind to let me stay in the suite. Well ok you can be very persuasive. He just laughed, so where did the kids go. Well it seems that Kristen wanted to dance so they are next door. Oh how nice she thought. They want us to come and join them do you feel up to it. I do like to dance, but Scotty is over there if we can sneak in without him seeing us it would be nice. It’s up to you Ron if you want to we can. He looked at her and smiled I like to dance also say let’s give it a go. He thought why is she so worried about seeing that Scotty guy’.

The club was gorgeous reminded her of the good old days of drinking and dancing. Lots of people out for a week day. When they walked in Ron had his hand to the small of her back and they found where the kids were seated. So what do you want to drink? Oh I think club soda with a twist of lime. He gave the waitress their drink orders. Kate liked the band. Would you like to dance sure I would love to. Of course it was a slow song. Ron was a good dancer she was impressed. The song ended and the voice at the microphone said. Hey everyone we have a real treat tonight my old friend Scotty Spencer has graciously said he would sing us a song or two. Oh hell no she thought.

When he got on stage she saw him look her way and smile and wink. Oh please don’t you do it she thought. I want to dedicate this song to a very special lady who was and is in my life Kate. He started singing when I was your man. What the hell that’s a Bruno Mars song. Ron looked at her and asked you want to dance another one. Sure might as well. She noticed he was holding her tighter and closer what the hell is his problem. He can’t be jealous of Scotty he doesn’t remember me. When the song ended and they were leaving the dance floor someone took ahold of her arm it was Scotty smiling can I have a word with you. She looked at Ron
