About this ebook

Every word on every page has been inspired by the Holy Spirit. He spoke, I listened and wrote what I heard. So that makes Him the REAL Author. I pray that this book will be to you as soul-reaching, soul-searching and soul-healing as they have been to me. So if you feel as if you cannot see your way out of your dilemma, Jesus is waiting to guide you to safety just like He did for me. The Son shines on my path every day, to keep me on the straight and narrow. He is the Light in my dark tunnel. Allow His Light to shine on your pathway and God will abundantly bless you, as you leave those dark experiences behind and allow the Son to shine in your life.

I was born and raised on the beautiful Caribbean island of St. Christopher (St. Kitts), known in some places as Sugar City. I graduated from the Basseterre High School in 1970, and got married in 1976. In 1981 my husband, our son and I migrated to St. Thomas, Virgin Islands. We have two daughters who were born in the Virgin Islands. Our children have blessed us with four grand-daughters and three grand-sons. I am now retired, after working as a public servant for 19 years.

    Let Us Worship The King

    The Son Is Shining

I give glory to God the Father and His Son, and honour to the Holy Spirit who has been the source from Whom every poem and every exhortation were conceived.

This book is dedicated to my sister and friend, Ingrid A. Hutchinson, who has been persistently demanding (in love of course), that I publish a book of poems. She has truly been ‘the wind beneath my wings’.

I also dedicate it to her husband and my Pastor, Whitbourne E. Hutchinson who continually encouraged me to put my writings into print.

I trust that as you read each poem and exhortation that you will receive from them, the purpose for which they were given to me to pass on to you. God bless you as you read The Son Shines.

    With much love,

    Always Say A Prayer

    and

    Pray Until Something Happens

    Mark 5:21-36

The dictionary describes prayer as spiritual communion with God. So you may ask what then is communion. Again the dictionary describes communion as sharing of thoughts and emotions; intimate communication. You see, God wanted a creature with which He could have a heart to heart relationship; one who could enjoy the beauties of creation with Him as they walked and talked together. Adam and Eve were created for such a purpose. It is said that God came down in the cool of evening to talk with them. Can you imagine what it must have been like back then? Just let us use our imagination for a minute. Listen to Adam and Eve lying in bed early in the morning, laughing and talking about the good time they had with God the night before and can’t wait for the evening time for Him to visit them again. Who knows? There may have been times when they didn’t want God to leave, so He may have lovingly had to cause sleep to come over them so He could leave. But look at the tender smile on His face as He tucks them in like the loving parent He is, and thinks of the good plans He has for them. Unfortunately, that form of God-to-man communication was broken when sin entered the garden. Oh how much God’s heart was pierced by their sin, because it meant Man’s separation from Him. Adam and Eve would have to leave the Garden of Eden, and God would no longer come down in person to walk and talk with them. But thank God that is not the end of the story. God’s love for Man is so much more than what we can wrap our puny human minds around, that even though He’s had reasons upon reasons to get rid of the human race, he has always made a way to bring us back into communication with Him. Fellowship with us means more than the world to God, it cost Him His only begotten Son – He didn’t do it because of us, but because of who He is, and we know that God is…. Love!

In the previous verses of the chapter that we read, we see where Legion was delivered by Jesus and is on his way home to tell his family and friends what God has done for him. We pick up the story where Jesus has now crossed over by ship to the other side; but it seems that no sooner had He hit the shore, the crowd gathered around Him again. Now, since Jairus was ‘a ruler of the synagogue’, perhaps making his way to Jesus was not as difficult as it would have been for others who were trying to get close to the Master. Yet when I read verse 22, somehow I don’t believe that he just casually walked up to Jesus; this man was desperate to get to Jesus and nobody else in that crowd mattered. His daughter was real sick, and he knew that Jesus could make a difference in her situation. He had an urgent need to have some intimate communication with Jesus. Notice though, that the first thing he did was to worship Jesus, (he fell at His feet) and then he made his request. Seeing Jairus’ faith and hearing his petition, Jesus set off to go with him and of course the crowd followed. I’m certain that as they went along others joined the procession, (perhaps more so out of curiosity than anything else). Now I strongly believe that Jesus could have spoken the Word and Jairus’ daughter would have been healed at that moment. He didn’t have to go to the house, but He knew that there was this particular woman waiting for Him to pass her way. We see a similar situation with the woman at the well where John 4:4 says "And He must needs go through Samaria. In other words, there was a very important reason" for Jesus to go to that particular place, at that particular time. You see friends, God knows our needs, he is well acquainted with the desires of our hearts and when we do our part, He will move heaven and earth to come to our aid. If we will just use our mustard seed faith and prayer, God will always meet us at our point of need.

Let us compare and contrast Jairus and the woman with the issue of blood for a quick second; we’ll see that the only thing that they really had in common is that they both desperately needed Jesus’ help. Jairus was a ‘man’ and a ‘ruler of the synagogue while the woman was considered as a lower class just because of her gender. Jairus rushed to the front of the line to get to Jesus – and because he was a ‘big shot’, perhaps his security guards were clearing the way for him, while the woman had to stay in the back enduring all the pushing and shoving until the right moment when she could get close enough to secretly" touch Jesus’ garment. Just imagine that there must have been moments when she was that close, and then somebody who was bigger and stronger would come in between Jesus and her. We know that a great loss of blood renders a person very weak; therefore, we ought to bear in mind that since she had this blood problem for so long, it would not have taken much to push her aside. But it didn’t matter the hardships that she had to go through though, nothing or nobody was going to stop her from getting to Jesus. The Bible says that the battle is not for the strong, but he who endures to the end shall be saved (this woman sure showed us what endurance means).

Then we see that Jarius’ request was made publicly, while the woman made her request in ‘private’; (her reaction in verse 33 leads us to believe that she did not want her business to be publicized so she secretly made her way to Jesus). But doesn’t the Bible tell us in Matthew 6:6 that when we pray in secret God will reward us openly? This woman and her secret request did not remain private for very long, all to the glory of God. I imagine that those who were close enough to hear Jesus’ question, must have thought that He had lost His mind. I mean, come on, You are in a crowd and You’re going to ask who touched You? Everybody is touching or trying to touch You! But Jesus always asks those questions which make us stop and think, doesn’t He?

In our day and age, we are not able to literally speak to Jesus face to face like Jairus, or to touch and handle Him like the woman with the issue of blood. However, when He said that we must come boldly to the throne of grace, and again cast all your cares upon Me for I care for you, He gave us the privilege to touch Him anytime and anyplace. We have such a greater opportunity than Jairus and the woman because we can touch God anytime and anywhere, through Jesus, with our prayers. Now, if you are in a relationship with someone you always want to be able to communicate, right? If you don’t communicate, or don’t want to communicate, there must be something radically wrong. For example, most of us are old enough to know the time when there was no telephone in our homes. What happened when a loved one went away to another island or country? We looked for the mailman or checked the mailbox every day, right? Why? Because we wanted to know what was going on with our loved one – we wanted to have a form of communication with that person. A few years later came the telephone, but it was our neighbour’s, so a message was left from the loved one and passed on to us – indirect communication, but communication nonetheless. This can be compared to Moses hearing from God and passing on the message to the children of Israel; or the High Priest going into the holy of holies on behalf of the people. Today we have cell phones, so direct communication is possible anywhere, at any hour, day or night. When God sacrificed His Son on Calvary, it gave us access to direct communication with Him any hour of the day or night. Prayer is our ‘cell phone’ to get to God. As the Word says we can ‘come boldly to the throne of grace’. It doesn’t matter what condition we are in, we do not have to be afraid to approach God because He loves us, and we have an Advocate (Jesus), who represents us before the Father.

1 John 4:10 says, Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us, and sent His Son to be the propitiation (the go-between) for our sins. And verse 19 says, "We love Him because He first loved us. It all began with His love for us, and it will end with His love for us. But in order for Him to show us the good plans that He has promised us, we must be in constant communication with Him, despite any obstacles that may be in the way. As we continue to look at Jairus and the woman, we’ll see that there was discouragement all around them. That woman had to go through some stuff to get to Jesus. She couldn’t even see Jesus’ face because of all the people that were between them. Most likely she was getting pushed around, pushed down and stepped upon, but nothing was going to deter her; she didn’t even want to draw attention to herself, all she wanted was to just ‘touch not hold on to, just to touch the hem of His garment. She had to get to Jesus because He was her only hope, and because of her perseverance she was made whole.

In Jairus’ case, he got to Jesus to make his request. Verse 24 says that Jesus went with him and that suggests to me that Jesus was going to honour Jairus’ request (to answer his prayer). I know Jairus was feeling such a sense of relief knowing that Jesus was on the way to heal his daughter. Since the answer was on the way, one would think that he was home free, and that there was nothing else that could cause any interruption, but that could not have been further from the truth. We must be aware of the fact that even though we may pray and believe with all our heart that the answer is on the way, it doesn’t mean that sometimes there won’t be discouragement in our path, but we must block out every other sound and listen to the still small voice of God’s Holy Spirit as He speaks to us. We cannot allow anything or anybody to cause our faith to waiver. Thank God that Jairus was wise enough to listen to Jesus instead of paying attention to the bearer of bad news. God wants us to relax, be comfortable when we go to Him in prayer, knowing that He always has our best interest at heart.

We must not and cannot wait to go before God in prayer, only when we find ourselves in trouble. We must remember at all times to ‘enter into His gates with thanksgiving and into His courts with praise: be thankful unto Him and bless His name’. Why? ‘For the Lord is good; His mercy is everlasting; and His truth endures to ALL generations’.
