    Introduction

O f course the question arises-Why meditate? What can it do for me?

To regain balance and harmony, create a healthier lifestyle, and bring more positive energy into our lives, meditation is essential. Through mediation, we can achieve all that we desire. I know it sounds impossible, but it is true! All things are possible if our intentions are correct and if we channel it in the right direction. Meditation can help us achieve this.

Times are changing (when haven’t they been changing), and it is time for us to change along with them. Learning to meditate is the key to unlocking a better self image, healing ourselves, creating improved health-physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, releasing old and outmoded ways of thinking and behaving, removing negative influences and people from our lives, and allowing us access to our higher knowledge and wisdom. It can help us form a deeper more personal relationship with our Higher Power and celestial beings. Meditating can also be instrumental in helping us to find our true paths and purposes in life. In essence, mediation takes a life that is out of order and in chaos and brings it back into order. Removing the chaos makes life, and ourselves, more manageable.

Meditation offers us the opportunity to find a more effective way to live and a better way to cope with obstacles and challenges, many of which are rooted somewhere in our past. Using meditation, we can explore these past experiences and discover the events and the patterns of behavior that cause us distress, illness, and unbalance.

If our goal is simply to learn how to alleviate tension, stress, and anxiety, then this book can help. If our goal is physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual self improvement, then this book can help. If our goal is to develop a keener and deeper understanding of ourselves and our roles and paths in life, then this book can help. And if our goal is to accomplish all of these things, and in addition, to come into contact with all of the Universal help available to us, then, yes, of course, this book can help.

It is my intention to help you on your journey through this lifetime with this special prescription for a more balanced, harmonious, and more enlightened life. I offer all of this to you with unconditional love and with the highest of intentions, in accordance with all that is good and true and pure in the Universe, for your highest good and for the highest good of all concerned.

May you find what you are looking for in these pages, and may it be a blessing to you.

    Love and Light-Always,

    Robin Milholland

    PART I

    The Basics

    Chapter 1

    Getting Ready to Meditate

I n order to create the best possible experience with meditation, follow these simple suggestions.

    1. Comfort: Being comfortable while meditating contributes to having the best experience possible so dress comfortably. Avoid tight fitting clothing that presses on the body and obstructs the flow of energy. Yoga pants, exercise pants, sweat pants, pajamas, loose fitting shirts, and loose dresses work very well. As for shoes, I always prefer to meditate barefoot, but that’s not to say that wearing shoes or sandals is wrong. I just like the comfort and freedom of bare feet. Try it both ways and decide for yourself.

    2. Timing: First thing in the morning and before bedtime are the most common times to meditate, but meditation can be done any time of the day or evening. Meditating at sunrise or sunset, during a full moon, during equinoxes and solstices can enhance meditation experiences and can produce some surprising and pleasing results.

Whenever you choose to meditate, you should make sure you have enough time to complete your meditation. You don’t want to be disturbed in the middle of what you are doing. If you only have a limited amount of time, setting a timer can help you to stay within your time frame.

Additionally, finding a few minutes each day to simply just breathe, center, balance, and ground yourself works wonders and keeps you in tune and prepared for the challenges of the day. Consider a few minutes in the morning before work, during a work break, in the shower, or while waiting in line at the grocery store or parent pick up line up at your child’s school.

    3. Location: Find a quiet place away from others, loud noises, and interruptions. If you have a room in your home that meets these needs, then you have found the perfect location. You can always hang a Do Not Disturb, Gone Fishing, or Out to Lunch sign on the door to ensure your privacy.

Natural settings are great places to meditate. Consider places like a beach, the mountains, woods, fields, and meadows, even a peaceful park. Also, finding a special place near water such as a stream, brook, pond, lake, or even a fountain can have a soothing effect.

If none of these outdoor settings is available, you can create your own special mediation space in a backyard, garden, patio, or on a balcony. Fill the space with potted plants or flowers, a comfortable place to sit like some cushions, some wind chimes, or even an electric, desk top waterfall.

    4. Positioning: Whether you sit or recline is a personal choice. When reclining, uncross and extend your legs as this allows the energy to flow freely and harmoniously through you. When sitting, there are several options. First, you can sit in the lotus position which is cross-legged with your legs folded one over the other. Second, you can sit with your feet flat on the floor and uncrossed.

    5. State of Mind: If you are agitated, overwrought, or in an upheaval, then you may need to or want to spend some additional time just doing some meditative breaths until you feel calm and steady enough to move on to the other steps. During your meditation, if your mind wanders and you find it difficult to concentrate, just focus on your breathing, focus on the breath entering and exiting your body.

Here is an important caution: if you have been drinking alcohol or have taken consciousness-altering medications like cold medicines, then you should postpone meditating. These substances often impede concentration, clarity, and discernment, and your meditations could be unproductive, unreliable, or disjointed.

    6. Music: It is not a must to play music while meditating, but it does add an extra little something to the experience. It can soothe your mind and your emotions, and is often a pleasant accompaniment to meditation. Soft instrumental, new age music, or natural sounds like waves are just a few ideas.

    7. Candles: Using candles can help to create a peaceful and pleasant meditation atmosphere and add extra power and energy to your meditation goal. You can never go wrong with white candles. They are most commonly used and work well for all meditation purposes. You can also use colored candles that match the specific goal of your meditation. Colored candles can be used individually or combined with other colors for multiple purposes. Although you can purchase your candles at any store, a visit to a new age shop can familiarize you with a variety of colors and scents, and are labeled according to purpose.

    8. Using Sage and Incense: Using white sage, called saging or smudging, neutralizes negative energy and clears away unwanted or stale energy. Use sage around yourself and/or in your meditation space before meditating.

Saging is a very simple process and requires only three things: white sage, which you can buy from a new age shop, a smudge pot which is a small glass or ceramic bowl used to catch any falling embers or ashes during the smudging, and matches or a lighter.

First, using the matches or lighter, light the sage. At first it will burn, then it will smoke. It is the smoke that you want, the smokier the better. Next, being careful to catch any falling embers or ashes, gently wave the smoking sage over and around your head, around your body, and throughout the meditation space. Finally, when done, stub out the smoking sage in the smudge pot. It is not necessary to use all the sage at one time. Use only what you need and save the rest for another time.

If you decide on incense, it’s wise to choose one that has an appealing aroma and is all-natural. It is advisable to never buy incense that contains toxins or inorganic ingredients. Once again, a new age shop is your best bet for the right incense.

If, however, the smokiness of the sage is bothersome for you, then you can purchase sage spray. This works just as well as the natural sage. The benefit of the spray, besides a lack of smokiness, is that is portable and you can bring it with you and sage your car, office, or any other indoor area.

    9. Using Crystals and Stones: There is a lot of power and energy in crystals and other stones. Using them can help manifest what is needed in your life and help you to accomplish your goals. Additionally, using crystals or stones can heighten your senses and increase the intensity of your meditations. If the idea is appealing to you, then do a little research to find out which crystals or stones will work best for your particular needs. New age shops often offer a variety of crystals and stones. The best way to choose exactly the right one is to let the crystal or stone speak to you. Hold it in your hands. If you get a strong and positive feeling, then it may be the right stone for you.

    10. Using These Meditations: All of the meditations in this book are tried and true. I originally created them for the meditation classes that I was teaching at our local adult community school. The results were always positive, and my students always left class feeling calm, balanced, enlightened, and satisfied with their experiences.

The meditations are ordered so that you can progress gradually, beginning with breathing and relaxing and progressing to the higher level or advanced meditations. All of the mediations provide an explicit step-by-step process making them simple and easy to follow. Choose the ones that appeal to you, but don’t be afraid to try others. You may be both surprised and pleased at the experiences you have and the outcomes that develop.

There are several ways you can use these mediations. First, you can read over a meditation until you become familiar with it enough to try it on our own. If you do this, be assured that as long as you have the gist of the meditation and don’t miss
