    PREFACE

Many unsuspecting young boys and girls have been sexually abused by caregivers who turned out to be paedophiles. These include relations, family friends, teachers, religious leaders, neighbours, and parents in some cases. Also, many young people have become sexually permissive. Incest, homosexual relationship, masturbation and prostitution are common among today’s children and adolescents. The physiological, psychological, spiritual as well as the socio-economic consequences of this trend on the individual, the family and the society are grievous.

Hence, parental intervention is imperative. This book, How to Protect Young People Against Sexual Abuse and Risky Sexual Behaviors is designed to equip parents and caregivers with the knowledge and skills that they need in order to protect young people against sexual abuse and harmful sexual behaviors.

The book contains seven chapters. Chapter one is a documentary on the incidence of sexual abuse of minors in Nigeria. Chapter two provides insight into the meaning and forms of sexual abuse and how it is perpetrated. It also presents tips that would assist parents to identify potential perpetrators of sexual abuse. Chapter three is a presentation of the victim in a situation of sexual abuse. It highlights the experience, consequences, indications, and risk factors of sexual abuse as well as the assistance that could be rendered to the victim. Chapter four presents an overview of risky sexual behaviors among young people as well as the signs that are suggestive of a child’s involvement in sexual activities.

Chapter five is a discussion of the risk factors and causes of sexual abuse and risky sexual behaviors among young people, while chapter six highlights the measures that could be taken to protect young people against sexual abuse and risky sexual behaviours as well as how to help a child who is involved in risky sexual behaviours. Chapter seven which is the last chapter deals with questions which relate to young people’s sexuality as well as the answers. The author’s choice of the use of the feminine pronoun she is based on the belief that females are more vulnerable to sexual abuse than males.

Parents, teachers, counselors and other caregivers would find this book helpful in their provision of guidance and protection for young people against
