About this ebook

I Remember Yesterday is an effort at reminding us that the past has a numerous lessons to be learned if we take the time to explore its content. We have a tendency to take the positive aspects of our lives for granted, and view the negative experiences as destructive, therefore the negative events instead of being evaluated and understood are quickly rejected and the valuable lessons that they portray are lost. Joseph Trevinos new book I Remember Yesterday are the memoirs of an individual who has experience a lot of good and negative thing in his life, and has developed the knowledge that events in our lives do not happen in a random fashion. People we meet, things that we do, places we visit, pleasant and negative events that we experience, all are a part of the master plan in our lives that determine our destiny. So many lessons to learn if we would only take the time to do so.
Events depicted in this effort are authentic and by no means a figment of the authors imagination. They are convincing evidence there is a Guardian for each and every one of us that watches over us and on numerous occasions has led us from harms way. The role that we play during the cycle of life is important for all of us. Consider the numerous lives that we touch as we make our journey and the effect that we have on others.
At the early age of seventeen while in the Navy during World War2, he saw combat aboard the USS Louisville during a devastating kamikaze attack that left him shaken to his soul. He firmly believes that without the wisdom he received for his beloved Mother Fidela during early development, he would not have survived those devastating trying times.

    Foreword

I came to Westminster Presbyterian Church in the fall of 2008 to serve as pastor. Westminster is located in Piqua, Ohio, about thirty minutes north of Dayton. It is a small community where many have lived all their lives. Children initiate their educational journey in one kindergarten and then finish their junior and senior high school years together as well. I got to know Joseph J. Trevino, MD, early on in my time at Westminster. Every Sunday that he is able to be in church, he is there faithfully sitting on my left about three rows back from the front of the church. Many times as I look at him, I can see his eyes shining and full of love for God, for the church, and for those who come in contact with him.

Joseph is a man full of passion and lives a life that speaks of God’s presence and grace. He loves to share his story and will do so with any who asks. Friends or even strangers (who quickly become friends) have bathed in the light of God through Joseph’s storytelling of his life experience. And this little book is just that—a story shared from a life that has been well lived and full of grace that can only come from the One who created us.

Joseph reminds us right off that Thy will be done serves for each one of us as a powerful reminder that, no matter what, the ultimate power is God’s; and pointing to the Bible and his own life, he gives us wonderful living examples of this. Story after story, we see God’s power. I especially love the story about when Joseph was teaching in 1950. It was a fifth-grade class and his first experience as a teacher. Joseph reflects on how young and naive he was, which allows us all to enter the story no matter what insecurities we also may have.

Thank you, Joseph, for reminding each one of us that we all have a personal treasure. We just need to take the time to learn how to tap into our personal treasure and appreciate its magnificence then we too can be called a genius! No matter where our journey may take us, may the words of Joseph’s mother, Fidela, go with us: Be a good boy/girl today, and do not forget that God is watching—and he better be smiling.

    May it be so!

    Preface

And God said let there be light and there was light.

    —Genesis 1:3

Yesterday holds innumerable treasurers for us and is a constant reminder that there is a guardian that signals the direction in which we travel the road of life. We are naive and make the false assumption that things just happen in a random manner. We recite the Lord’s Prayer during our church services, and many of us do not have the faintest concept of what the four key words of the prayer signify. Thy will be done is a powerful reminder that the ultimate power is God’s. We seem to forget that God is so powerful that events can only take place if he wills it. This concept is difficult to accept because we have much difficulty accepting anything that seemingly is of a negative nature.

There are numerous lessons in the Bible that appear to be of a negative nature that led individuals to great success. The story of Joseph and his multicolored coat is a primary example, as well as that of David, Moses,
