    The Abode of Joy

    A heroic Saga Retold

Today I bow down in reverence to my Guru who told me that greatest things happen in quietest of the moments. Such was the story of a boy Mohan, written on the sands of time, to be narrated by someone who had been the part of the same story.

Mohan was barely ten years old when he was married off to an infant, just a few days old who happened to be the daughter of a friend of Thakur Babu, Mohan’s father. Marriage ceremonies were assisted and the girl’s father performed all the rituals with the little one in the lap. When the marriage ceremonies were over the girl’s father took over the baby to Mohan and putting her in his lap said, Now here is your wife! With a twinkle in his eyes Mohan looked at the baby and the baby too opened her tiny eyes and looked at Mohan’s face bent on her for the first time. Mohan had seen such a tiny creature with little hands and feet for the first time. He fell in love with her at that very moment. This was love at first sight!

While leaving for his home village Mohan asked his father, Won’t we take the baby home with us? He was told by his kin that the little baby was given to him as a gift and he could keep her throughout his life. This way he thought that since the baby belonged to him she should accompany him home. Thakur Babu smiled and putting his hand on his head in a gesture of blessings, said, No son, not now. These gifts included hand embroidered bed sheets, veils, saris some utensils and beddings etc along with some ornaments gifted by the mother who had worn the same in her wedding. She was also gifted ornaments by the groom’s mother. It was a beautiful custom to exhibit and groom girls talents. Being a good cook was considered a quality of the bride, since the people believed and is still true that the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach. But today’s woman whose maid feed the husband and her entire family may not understand this fact. The custom of dowry was later exploited by some people to fill their greed and
