Poetic Expression

About this ebook
After the loss of my twenty-year-old son, Barry R. Catron, due to a boating accident, I started putting my thoughts on paper in poem version. It has been and always will be my therapy! But I will never get over his loss. I hope there might be some material that I wrote that someone else might be able to relate to, and it might soothe their heart and soul for whatever challenge they might be facing.

I would like to express my appreciation to my sister, Faye for her valuable contribution during the planning and development of the illustrations for my book. My heartfelt thanks to my niece, Nicole who spent extra time for my front cover design. I wish to thank my family and friends for their unending love and support. Money And Things
We never had money
Nor any fame.
We were poor
Without shame.
The riches we had
Couldn’t be bought.
We didn’t care, we loved a lot.
Our lives weren’t easy
That’s for sure.
Nothing is
Worth caring for.
We lived simple
But we were free.
Our family’s love
Planted the seed.
Money and things didn’t
Fill our needs.
Prayer and love
Took the lead.
What I would give
To bring that back
Life would be better, that’s a fact.
By Kay Garrod Slusher
40328.pngNever Give In
Hopes and dreams are all we have.
Keep the faith, let go the sad.
Keep pushing forward
Don’t give in without a fight
And our dreams will take flight.
If you hit a bump in the road
Keep it and real, don’t go cold.
Never give up
And in the end
Our dreams are ours
We’re bound to win!
By Kay Garrod Slusher
40330.pngIn The Rain
Love is like a butterfly
It spreads its wings and flies.
Our tears are our raindrops
Falling from our eyes.
Music is the words
We can’t always say aloud.
One day we will understand
What our life is all about.
Our heart will keep beating
No matter what comes our way.
Until he’s ready
To bring us home, we’re here to
Laugh and love and dance
In the rain.
By Kay Garrod Slusher
40332.pngWe Will Never Let Go
You are forever etched in our heart,
Our soul, and our minds.
You might have passed yesterday,
Today, a week ago,
A month, or many years ago—who knows?
One thing is for certain, we will never let go.
We might get better at dealing with our pain
We will always speak proudly of our loved one’s name.
Time doesn’t make it better, no matter the cause.
And it is no less painful, the love and loss
The thought of letting go doesn’t cross our minds.
These are our children, no matter the time.
We love them, we need them
We miss them
We will never let go!
For those that expect it
They just don’t know!
By Kay Garrod Slusher
40334.pngOne Blood
We are all human.
We walk the same land.
We want the same things.
We breathe the same air.
We all have pain.
We’re all one blood.
All with different names
We all want loved.
We are here for a short while.
We don’t know our purpose.
Keep our heads up
And keep it real.
We should always show how
We really feel.
One blood
Our life
Seals the deal.
By Kay Garrod Slusher
40336.pngI Lost My Smile
My chest hurts.
My heart wants to explode.
My throat so dry,
My eyes so cold,
At times I look and feel so old.
I, at one time, was full of fight.
I lost my fire when you lost your life.
The knife in me
Is still in place.
I keep hoping to see your face.
I’m moving at a turtle’s pace.
You might think it is time to move on.
But the loss of a child
Doesn’t belong!
Lyrics to a life gone wrong.
No mother should have to bury their child.
And for these reasons
I lost my smile.
By Kay Garrod
40338.pngSilence
We live in the same space
Inside some lonely walls.
Walking on thin ice
Trying not to fall.
With an expressionless face
Trying to stand tall.
Silence is golden, so they say.
Being voiceless is so unfair.
Going through our day
Not knowing what to say
Communication has gone
It makes for long days.
Can’t express anger or sadness
And such, except in prayer.
You just have to accept
This well-spoken
Man or woman or child
Lost one of his most precious
God-given gifts.
Very little conversation in these walls.
We walk in this world
Feeling so small.
We have our life,
But we’re not really
Living.
We are voiceless
With so much to say!
By Kay Garrod Slusher
40340.pngLadybug
I saw a ladybug today
Of course I thought of you.
It made me smile,
Knowing it wasn’t a fluke.
I know you’re often with me,
The ladybug is proof.
My heart swelled with pride,
My eyes moistened with tears
Giving me that reassurance that
You are so near.
It’s things like these
That make it easier
Having to be apart.
I love those surprises
Keep up the good work.
I love you!
I miss you!

40342.pngPhotographic Memories
I remember the day you came into our life.
I was so scared and full of pride.
You gave me proof love was still alive.
You were only a few days old.
You could make me cry.
As time went on
You showed us what you were made of.
You were cute and so funny.
It was your sense of humor
Oh, what a ride.
And so talented, no lie.
It was your insecurities that gave you life.
You put words on paper
That most didn’t understand.
You were wise beyond your years
The lyrics you wrote hid your tears.
You were spontaneous
